Hello,

Last year our mum died in a freak car accident on the way to picking up her grandkids from their Aunty. I only saw the crash site for the first time just a couple weeks ago 🥺. The pain of her death was unbearable. Not attending her tāngi/funeral because the borders were closed for COVID-19 was the hardest. There is nothing worse in the entire world, that could compare to watching your loved ones funeral from a video call with bad reception. It broke my heart and still I don’t think I’m the same person I once was. I sat still in the dark getting fat in a country where no one understood me, I felt lonely and isolated, and for the first time in my life I wasn’t able to heal myself from trauma. They diagnosed me with depression and gave me anti depressants and a shrink. It didn’t work it just made me feel numb and lost sight of anything that made me, me! Pills don’t fix you, you have to fix yourself! This by far was the toughest year of my life. Yet somehow I made it through, passing my second year nursing degree!

It is her kids that are trying our best to come up with the funds to throw her unveiling. Everyone are all doing a fundraisers of some sort, or trying their best to save up. Colleen and I have decided on a fun run. The 7 Cairns Pain away 5km run, to run for her. Only a few weeks away. This will include a 5 km run, which is extremely challenging for us because we’re NOT runners.

We need your support to get us across the line. Our goal is to raise funds to put towards the unveiling. These events can cost up to $20,000, the headstone alone is costing $8000, then there is the flights, fuel, food, Marae/ accommodations etc.

If you can reach into your pockets with something as little as $10, not only would it mean the world to us but also you’ll be taking part in our health and fitness, raising awareness for mental health and giving our mum the headstone and unveiling, surrounded by all her loved ones, she deserves.
