My first completed art piece 🥹🎨

Jay asked me what I wanted to paint and I genuinely had NO idea, because I’m not quite a canvas and paint type of artist

We threw around ideas. I knew I wanted Black, fierce, feminine, BIGGG HAIRRR with some kind of universal magnitude to her. We put the ideas together and then just started… a rough plan, but with plenty of room to add, change and figure her out as I went along

And figure her out I DID 😂

There were mistakes. Things painted over. Oops 😂

And eventually, she appeared

At the very end I added the fireflies because YESSSS, she is indeed a god damn goddess. And she doesn’t have flowers in her hair. She has the whole damn universe in there ✨

But looking at her finished, I realised there was something much deeper in her that I hadn’t necessarily planned.

The eldest daughter

Particularly in so many Black cultures, the eldest daughter can carry things that were never really hers to begin with

Your mother’s pain. Her struggles. The things she survived but perhaps never had the opportunity to heal from. The responsibilities she carried, passed down because somebody had to carry them next

The generational trauma that had to land somewhere

Family. Expectations. Responsibility. Being the strong one. The dependable one. The one who understands. The one who copes. Sometimes raising her siblings like they were her own children because there simply wasn’t anyone else to do it

And the strange thing about carrying weight for long enough is that you learn to carry it so gracefully that nobody looking from the outside would ever know how HEAVY it is

That’s what I see when I look at her

This enormous weight behind her, almost bigger than she is, and yet she is still standing

Still soft. Still curious. Still reaching her hand towards the light

Still finding magic amongst all that darkness

There is an entire universe inside this woman that exists beyond what she has been asked to carry

The weight is part of her story

But it does not get to be all that she is ❤️

Sometimes it be like that… 👀🫣
