Unconscious bias: Stereotypical hiring practices. | Gail Tolstoi-Miller | TEDxLincolnSquare 10/09/2023

It is frequently heard that businesses are facing a shortage of staff. Sometimes it's necessary to think creatively and search beyond the obvious places to locate what you're seeking.

Maybe try creating a modern workforce that includes diversity and inclusion. Implement blind recruitment strategies that see beyond a person's race, religion, age, disability and sexual orientation because this pool of talent may also have the skills to fill that empty role.

Businesses are beginning to recognise that staff subjected to customer abuse can create stress-related illnesses particularly in roles where employees are exposed to regular abuse; banks, internet providers, health workers, and retail are some of the endless examples. Intervention strategies are vital for the wellbeing and health of your team.

Workplace bullying is a complex behaviour that can be so subtle and, if gone undetected, can cause severe trauma to victims. We live in a society where domestic violence is unacceptable, but every day many people across Australia go to work knowing a bully will target them.

Can you imagine how this feels to have that anxious, nervous feeling, stress-related depression and severe anxiety that can lead to the inability to function productively as an employee in the workplace

Through experience and education I specialise in workplace bullying/harassment and discrimination prevention. If you believe you are victimised at work or know someone that is a victim, reach out to me at [email protected]. I can offer support and point you in the right direction

There are lots of ways to change a toxic workplace. But one of the most effective ways is to have a discussion around backstabbing. If a business banned backstabbing for 3 months, do you think this will change a toxic workplace? - I reccommend it is a very good start this change!!
" NO BACKSTABBING ZONE".

We live in a world where people are moving around, relocating to different countries, cities and towns. We live in a world of change where acceptance of your sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, marital status, disability and many other differences exists. So it makes sense that we all should understand the meaning of discrimination in the workplace. There is no space for discrimination of any sort!! Discrimination works on exclusion, lowers self esteem, not to mention the hefty fines if discrimination exists in your workplace!

I briefly worked for a recruiting company quite some time ago. At that time, I saw a resume from one of the recruiter's desks put into the 'no action" pile. I picked up the resume and saw that the applicant was highly qualified in his area of work. Had all the required credentials, had great experience and well educated. I couldn't figure out why this resume was in that pile. I also noticed he had just migrated to Australia and had an unusual name. Was this a case of unconscious bias recruiting? Maybe.

Embracing diversity provides opportunity for a business and employee to develop innovative ideas, be creative, provide different prospective on ideas and offer a chance for employees to professionally develop. Embrace diversity!! Why wouldn't you!!
