Hocus Pocus Body Piercing

To all my beautiful clients, followers and fellow piercing addicts: choosing jewellery for your piercing can feel a little overwhelming, especially with so many different styles available. Your piercer will be happy to talk you through the jewellery type that’s right for your piercing, and any reputable piercer will know to use the correct jewellery in the correct spots. But it’s not just about what looks good—the shape, movement and way it sits in your body can all affect how a piercing heals.

Rings come in different styles, and each has its own advantages. Seamless and hinged rings are easy to change, while captive bead rings can be trickier to remove. Fixed bead rings offer a similar look to CBRs, with a more straightforward changeover.

Barbells are another common jewellery style, available in different shapes and lengths to suit specific placements. Some piercings require a straight piece of jewellery to harmonise with the body’s natural anatomy and allow the piercing to heal correctly. Using the wrong shape can put pressure on the tissue, cause irritation and contribute to migration or rejection. For example, staple bars are the only appropriate jewellery for flat surface piercings.

Understanding what your jewellery actually looks like can help you visualise how it sits in the body, why certain pieces are recommended for certain placements, and why your anatomy matters more than the jewellery trend of the week.

Healing piercings is VERY different for every person, placement and environment. This little info graphic outlines some time frames for common standard piercings, and the absolute MINIMUM amount of time any individual will take to heal them. Always consult with your piercer before changing jewellery for any new piercing, and never assume your piercing is healed because it “feels fine” ✨🖤🌙

Say no to numbing cream !

In all seriousness, numbing cream shouldn’t be used when getting piercings.

Why ? Well, least of all, numbing cream doesn’t really work for piercings. It works by targeting the outer skin layers, whereas a piercing needle creates a perforation of the skin.

A hole that goes straight through to the other side.

So, say your numbing cream DOES manage to numb the first layers, a piercing goes much deeper than the surface, so you’d still feel the actual pinch anyway!

The more important reason not to apply numbing cream for a piercing is that it alters the biological makeup of the tissue which can make manipulation of the tissue far more difficult for your piercer. Furthermore, it neglects the precision required when doing a piercing because of where the cells sit in the altered state.

Honestly, using numbing cream for a piercing procedure isn’t worth the money, time or risk to your piercing. The most common response I get from people is that the anticipation was far worse than the split second of pain itself.

Please guys, and I say this with love and kindness, SKIP the numbing cream!
