More Fun Facts, from Ink Nurse! 👩‍⚕️📝👩‍🏫
For those that reach for the red pawpaw tube on fresh tattoos, maybe this will change your mind?

Because here’s what’s actually in it. 👇

That “pawpaw” balm? Around 4% pawpaw on average.

The rest is mostly petroleum jelly: the same occlusive base as Vaseline. It was made to soothe chapped lips, not heal a wound, and we all know about petroleum jelly by now, we’ve been harping on about it for a decade already…

So just when you thought the little red tubes or red jars were this all natural, cheap saviour and alternative option for such things as tattoo aftercare? Think again.

A fresh tattoo IS an open wound. Heavy petroleum occlusives trap heat, moisture and bacteria against healing skin, when your ink actually needs to breathe. That’s why it was never built for tattoos.

Ink Nurse is petroleum-free, vegan and botanical. Purpose-built for tattoo healing + longevity. In 600+ Chemist Warehouse Official stores nationally.

The experts in tattoo health + longevity.

People also ask:
Is paw paw ointment good for tattoos?
It was formulated for chapped lips and minor dry skin, not for healing fresh ink.

What is paw paw ointment actually made of?
Around 4% fermented pawpaw. The majority is petroleum jelly.

Can you put petroleum on a new tattoo?
It’s occlusive, so it can trap moisture and bacteria on a healing wound. A breathable botanical formula is better suited.

What’s the best petroleum-free tattoo aftercare in Australia?
Ink Nurse: vegan, fragrance-free and botanical, stocked in Chemist Warehouse.

The tattoo industry was taught that thick, greasy petroleum ointments were the standard.

We disagreed and went a step further.

Ink Nurse is a modern botanical-based aftercare cream that’s lightweight, fast-absorbing and designed for the way people actually want their skin to feel.

Lightweight cream > thick waxy balms.

If you haven’t tried ink nurse, than you have nothing to compare it to - we’re the only ones that do it this way.

Most tattoo numbing creams sold in Australia are illegal. Not “a bit dodgy.” Not “Grey area.” But… Illegal under the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989.

Here’s what we found when we looked properly:

Every legal numbing cream in Australia must be registered on the ARTG with an AUST R number. Most products sold via Instagram ads, Shopify sites and tattoo expos don’t have one.

Lidocaine above 10% is prescription only in Australia. Products marketed at 20%, 30% or 40% lidocaine are, by definition, Schedule 4 medicines that cannot be sold over the counter under any circumstance.

Topical anaesthetics absorb into the bloodstream. The FDA has documented deaths from misuse of high-strength numbing creams. A 2023 peer-reviewed case study documented cardiac complications in a patient who used an overseas tattoo numbing gel before a session.

Legal options already exist in your pharmacy. Emla, Numit and LMX4 are all AUST R registered, manufactured under pharmaceutical GMP, and often cheaper than the grey-market alternatives.

We don’t make a numbing cream… BUT…
When we do, it will be on the ARTG with an AUST R number and sold through pharmacy.

That’s the only way we know how to build products.

We took a deep dive into this and uploaded a comprehensive blog post now live at ink-nurse.com - search for the menu: Educational Blogs.

The right artist matters, of course.
But your aftercare matters too. 👩‍⚕️

A perfect tattoo can still heal rough with the wrong products. Dryness, cracking, irritation, itching and dull healed results are all part of the healing phase some people think is “normal”.

That’s why Ink Nurse was built differently.

Our tattoo aftercare bundle is designed to support the skin barrier during every stage of healing:

• Tattoo Aftercare Cream
• Foam Wash Soap
• FREE Second Skin (in every order)

Your healing essentials 🤝

No heavy greasy feel. No suffocating petroleum texture. Just fast-absorbing aftercare made for tattoo healing + skin barrier support.

Better healed tattoos start with better aftercare.

We were the first. The original. The only Australian tattoo aftercare brand built to call out Bayer and challenge Bepanthen head-on. ⚔️

Backed by the accreditations no nappy rash cream was ever asked to earn for tattooed skin:

✓ GMP Certified
✓ ISO 22716 (Cosmetic Good Manufacturing Practice)
✓ NATA Pharmaceutical Microbial Testing
✓ PET (Preservative Efficacy Testing)
✓ Full Stability Testing
✓ EU CPNP Registered
✓ Certified by Dermatologist
✓ FDA MoCRA Compliant #
✓ Australian Tattooists Guild Partnership (the only aftercare brand to hold this)

Since 2015, Ink Nurse has stood for one idea: nappy rash ointment was never made for tattoos. Bepanthen is petroleum-based, occlusive, and formulated for babies’ bottoms. On a healing tattoo, that heavy barrier traps heat, suffocates fresh skin, and can dull pigment before your ink has the chance to set. An entire generation grew up being told to slather on a nappy cream because there was nothing else. We changed that.

Ink Nurse Remedy Cream is petroleum-free, botanical, and purpose-built for tattooed skin. Manufactured in our state-of-the-art facility with third-party QC. Stocked in 600+ Chemist Warehouse stores nationally.

Made for babies. Or made for tattoos.
The choice was never close.

The experts in tattoo health + longevity.

People Also Ask:

Q: Is Bepanthen good for tattoos?

A: Bepanthen is a petroleum-based nappy rash ointment made by Bayer, formulated for babies. The occlusive barrier traps heat and can interfere with how a fresh tattoo heals.

Q: What was the first purpose-built tattoo aftercare in Australia to challenge Bepanthen?

A: Ink Nurse, launched in 2015 as the original Australian botanical tattoo aftercare brand to directly challenge nappy rash creams.

Q: Why does petroleum matter for tattoo healing?

A: Petroleum sits on top of skin as an occlusive seal. On a fresh tattoo, that traps heat and moisture in a way the skin was never meant to heal under.

Q: Where can I buy Ink Nurse?

A: 600+ Chemist Warehouse stores nationally, plus ink-nurse.com for bundles and full range.
