With winter around the corner, establishing good habits are more important than ever, as the drop temperature naturally causes muscle stiffness and what appears to be new aches and pains as well as a flare-up of an old injury.
The reality is, the majority of discomfort is caused by the following 3 reasons-
1. REDUCTION IN EXERCISE
As the weather gets colder and darker you are generally a lot less likely to get out for a jog or even a walk, this not only means that your lower spine does not get the opportunity to extend and straighten, it also remains in the rounded position it’s been in all day at the office.
2. WEIGHT GAIN
Many people adjust their diet and swap their smoothie for a bacon sarnie which unsurprisingly can easily result in an accumulate of an extra few kilos over the winter period. The extra pressure on the lower back may be the cause of that achy feeling.
3. COUCH POTATOE SYNDROME!
Winter tends to elicit visions of streaming game of thrones with an extra-large bowl of popcorn in hand (or is that just me?!). However, increased periods in the sitting/laying position also massively increases the load on the lower back through tightening of hip flexors and gluteal muscles. This also constricts blood flow to your limbs causing you to feel cold and stiff.
So whether it’s a simple sun salutation in the mornings or your favourite spin class at the gym, I’m sure you’ve picked up on the message here and the importance of continued movement really is the key.
Should you find the pain levels become uncomfortable, be sure to book in for hip realignment and soas release.
I would love to hear about your winter routine that keeps you motivated and moving throughout winter. ❄

An active trigger point is one with spontaneous pain or pain in response to movement that can trigger local or referred pain.
Whereas, A latent trigger point is a sensitive spot with pain or discomfort only elicited in response to compression.
This is why it can be challenging to pinpoint the origin of the pain or discomfort.
There are in fact, a few trigger points in the foot, that can be felt in the head! 🤯

I don’t know about you, but I completely underestimated, the feeling of fulfilment experienced, when working in an area that you are naturally intuitive and passionate about!
Originally coming from a corporate background, I retrained and started my own business in Massage and Energetic Health through my own chronic back pain journey.
Being a mum of 2, I thrive on learning about the body and how we can not only, hold physical tension in our muscles but emotional tension too, and ultimately that link between body and mind healing and preventative care.
This kind of body work can also improve immune function, increase energy and alertness, while lowering heart rate and blood pressure.
It’s a win-win!
Who needs this too? 🙋

Although Sports Massage places emphasis on sports-related injuries or discomfort it's also ideal for those with highly intense jobs that have physical demands or those that remain active seeking a preventative treatment that may not necessarily have a specific injury needing attention 🏃♂️🏄♂️ 🚴♂️

Don’t wait until you’re dying before your schedule a bodywork session 🙃.
It’s going to take a lot more work to help you at that point than if you were to invest in preventative self-care.
