Myotherapy is derived from the Greek root "myo" meaning muscle. It is a form of manual medicine focusing on the diagnosis, treatment and management of musculoskeletal pain & dysfunction. Soft tissues, joints & ligaments can be damaged or irritated in accidents, sporting activities, by using incorrect posture, from over-use (repetitive activities) or under
✨ TIGHT FASCIA? LET’S GET THINGS MOVING.
Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds and supports your muscles and other structures throughout the body.
When an area feels tight, stiff or restricted, it can affect how comfortably you move.
💚 So how can cupping help?
Unlike techniques that apply downward pressure, cupping creates suction, gently lifting the skin and superficial tissues.
This may help to:
✨ Improve tissue mobility and glide
✨ Reduce feelings of muscular and fascial tightness
✨ Increase local circulation
✨ Improve movement in stiff or restricted areas
✨ Temporarily reduce pain and sensitivity
✨ Make it easier to move and stretch the area
At MJN, we love functional cupping — combining cups with movement rather than simply leaving them in one position.
By moving while the cups are applied, we can work on how the tissues glide and move together, then reassess your mobility afterwards.
🙌 Less restriction. Better movement.
Cupping is just one of the tools we may use as part of your individual Myotherapy treatment.

MuscleTightness Mobility
😬 Jaw pain, clicking or constant tension? Your TMJ might need some attention.
TMJ dysfunction can be about much more than just the jaw. Tightness through the neck, shoulders, upper back and surrounding facial muscles can all contribute to how the jaw moves and feels.
At MJN Clinical Myotherapy, we assess the bigger picture and look at what may be contributing to your symptoms.
✨ Myotherapy may help with:
• Jaw pain, aching & tightness
• Clicking or restricted jaw movement
• Headaches and facial tension
• Neck & upper shoulder tightness
• Muscle tension from clenching or grinding
• Reduced jaw mobility
Treatment may include targeted soft tissue release, dry needling, mobilisation and gentle jaw/neck exercises, depending on your presentation.
We don’t just chase the sore spot — we treat the body as a whole. 💚
If you’re constantly rubbing your jaw, waking up feeling tight, or noticing headaches alongside jaw tension, it may be worth having it assessed.

💪 COMMON ROTATOR CUFF INJURIES — IS YOUR SHOULDER TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING?
The rotator cuff is a group of 4 muscles and their tendons that work together to stabilise your shoulder and control movement.
When these structures become overloaded, irritated or injured, you may notice pain reaching overhead, weakness lifting your arm, pain sleeping on your side, clicking or catching, or an ache that travels down the outside of the upper arm.
Some of the most common rotator cuff presentations we see include:
🔹 Supraspinatus tendinopathy
Often associated with pain lifting the arm out to the side or overhead.
🔹 Rotator cuff tears
Can range from small partial-thickness tears to full-thickness tears and may cause pain, weakness or loss of function.
🔹 Subacromial pain / bursitis
Irritation around the rotator cuff and bursa can make reaching, dressing and overhead movements uncomfortable.
🔹 Rotator cuff overload
Repetitive work, gym training, sport or sudden increases in load can irritate the cuff even without a structural tear.
🔹 Infraspinatus & teres minor irritation
These muscles help externally rotate and stabilise the shoulder and can become overloaded with throwing, pulling and repetitive upper-body movements.
But here’s the important part… 👇
Shoulder pain isn’t always just about the shoulder.
At MJN, we assess the whole kinetic chain — including the neck, thoracic spine, scapular control, posture and surrounding muscular balance — to understand why your rotator cuff may be struggling.
Treatment may include:
✨ Myotherapy
✨ Dry needling
✨ Cupping
✨ Soft tissue treatment
✨ Joint mobilisation
✨ Scapular & rotator cuff strengthening
✨ Load and movement education
The goal isn’t simply to settle the sore spot — it’s to improve how the shoulder moves, loads and functions.

STRONG HAMSTRINGS = BETTER PELVIC CONTROL 🍑🦵
Your hamstrings do much more than bend your knee.
They cross the hip and attach into the pelvis, meaning they play an important role in hip extension, pelvic control and lower-limb stability.
When your hamstrings aren’t contributing effectively, other structures may have to work harder — particularly the glutes, hip flexors and lower back.
Building strong, well-functioning hamstrings can help support:
✨ Pelvic control during movement
✨ Hip stability and extension
✨ Better control through walking & running
✨ Glute and posterior-chain function
✨ Reduced compensation through the lower back
✨ Stronger movement through the entire kinetic chain
But remember — strong doesn’t just mean tight!
At MJN, we look at the whole picture: hamstrings, glutes, hip flexors, pelvis, lumbar spine and lower-limb mechanics.
Because sometimes the area that hurts isn’t the area causing the problem.
Treat the body as a whole. 💚

TMJ PAIN, HEADACHES OR DIZZINESS? YOUR SCM COULD BE INVOLVED 👀
The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) is the large muscle running from behind your ear down to your collarbone and sternum.
It helps turn, tilt and stabilise your head — but when it becomes tight, overloaded or develops trigger points, its referral pattern can be surprisingly widespread.
SCM referral may be felt as:
→ Pain around the TMJ & jaw
→ Headaches around the temple or forehead
→ Pain around or behind the eye
→ Aching around the ear
→ Facial or cheek discomfort
→ Pain travelling across the forehead
→ Neck stiffness & restricted rotation
→ In some people, sensations of dizziness, disequilibrium or nausea
WHY DOES THE SCM GET SO TIGHT?
📱 Forward-head posture
💻 Long hours at a desk
😬 Jaw clenching & bruxism
😮💨 Stress & altered breathing patterns
🛏️ Sleeping positions
🚗 Prolonged driving
🏋🏼♀️ Neck and shoulder overload
And here’s the interesting part…
Where you FEEL the pain isn’t always where it’s COMING from.
Someone may present with temple headaches or jaw discomfort, while part of the muscular contribution is actually sitting down the side of the neck.
At MJN Clinical Myotherapy, we assess the whole picture — SCM, TMJ, suboccipitals, upper cervical spine, shoulders and thoracic region — rather than simply treating the painful spot.
Treatment may include:
✨ Trigger point release
✨ Dry needling
✨ Cupping
✨ TMJ treatment
✨ Cervical & thoracic mobilisation
✨ Breathing and postural strategies
✨ Home mobility & self-release
Headaches + jaw tension + a tight neck?
Your SCM may be worth investigating. 💚
Persistent or unexplained dizziness, nausea or new/severe headaches should always be medically assessed, as these symptoms can have causes unrelated to muscular tension.

HEADACHES? IT COULD BE COMING FROM YOUR NECK 🤯
That headache sitting behind your eye, wrapping around your temple or creeping up the back of your skull may actually be referred pain coming from the suboccipital muscles.
The suboccipitals are a small group of muscles located right at the base of your skull. They work hard to stabilise and control the upper neck — and they can become overloaded with:
📱 Prolonged screen & phone use
💻 Desk posture
😬 Stress & jaw tension
🛏️ Poor sleeping positions
🚗 Long periods of sitting or driving
🏋🏼♀️ Upper neck and shoulder tension
When these muscles become tight and irritated, they can contribute to referred pain patterns such as:
→ Pain at the base of the skull
→ Headaches travelling up and over the head
→ Pain around the temple
→ Aching or pressure behind the eye
→ Upper neck stiffness
→ That heavy, tight “headache” feeling
At MJN Clinical Myotherapy, we don’t just chase where the headache hurts — we assess what may be driving it.
Treatment may include:
✨ Dry needling
✨ Trigger point release
✨ Cupping
✨ Upper cervical & thoracic mobilisation
✨ Jaw, neck & shoulder release
✨ Home stretches and self-release strategies
Sometimes the key to helping your headache is actually a few centimetres below it. 💚
If headaches and neck tension keep creeping back, it may be time to look at the whole picture.

❄️ Winter Thoracic Stiffness
As the weather cools down, we naturally start to protect ourselves from the cold.
Shoulders creep up…
We hunch into jackets…
Cross our arms…
Spend more time sitting indoors…
Before long, the middle of the back (your thoracic spine) becomes stiff and stops moving the way it should.
When your thoracic spine loses mobility, other areas often have to work harder.
➡️ Tight neck muscles
➡️ Achy shoulders
➡️ Headaches
➡️ Pain between the shoulder blades
➡️ Even reduced shoulder movement
The good news?
Sometimes the neck isn’t actually the problem.
By improving movement through the thoracic spine and releasing the surrounding muscles, we can often reduce unnecessary strain on the neck and shoulders and help you move more freely.
Simple winter tip:
Every hour, stand up, clasp your hands behind your head and gently extend over the back of your chair 8–10 times. Your spine loves movement.
If winter stiffness is starting to creep in, don’t wait until it becomes pain.
