I recently watched Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Copote and was transported back to my years and tears as an apprentice hairdresser with the amazing but VERY french Thierry Frangiere, I had become obsessed with the hairstyle Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany's after seeing it for the first time at 17. I toiled for hours on my practice mannequin but just could not get it right, Thierry would taunt me in French saying things like "Glenn you must crawl before you can walk" and laugh as I made mistake after mistake only very occasionally stopping to show me how to place a bobby pin so it would not be seen or to scald me over my backcombing technique. I found this very hard to take and often fought back tears. Some weeks went by and I'd practice a little every day but never getting it right. Then one day he muttered. Something under his breath in French "postiche". I looked immediately at my French dictionary as was usual as he hardly spoke any English and I had recently failed French at school - the word meant hairpiece! I wasn't using enough hair, I rushed out and bought a ponytail switch and stayed up till 3 am till finally I got it right ! The next day I rushed into work with the mannequin head to show Thierry, he smiled at me and produced from his pocket a small rhinestone tiara like the one Audrey wore in the movie , the finishing piece of the puzzle - my gold Starr ! - instead of just showing me how to do it ( as he easily could having worked on the major shows in paris with his master the great Alexander of Paris ) he wanted me to use my brain and work it out for my self and learn from my mistakes. I've never forgotten this lesson and have always applied it it everything in my life. Recently I heard quote from the late Maya Angelou - life is not about the mistakes we have made in our lives but the culmination of who we have become having learned from those mistakes- Thierry continued to tough love train me for the next four years and I worked as a hairdresser for him for a few more years after that. He sadly died not long after that but I've never forgotten that valuable lesson and now years later I still remember it every time I have to do an "Audrey" for fancy dress or bridal. Merci Monsieur Thierry Frangiere x

Once your hair has been dyed a Dark shade for a period of years it can be difficult to remove the build up of dye with out destroying the condition the hair or end in up a with brassy orange colour. This process must be done gradually and will usually take around six months - the photos show the dark before colour and the first step of the after process on a lovely women I had in the salon this week Danielle Scott the best cosmetic tattoo practitioner in the country - I first very finely added highlights through the top section of her head using a low level ammonia bleach and then used a free hand method to give naturally lightened ends to the overall look. I then applied two coats of a cool caramel semi permanent toner to correct the yellow under tones years of dying her dark had produced the semi permanent toner was applied back to back so that it does not easily wash out which is so common in this type colour correction- stay tuned in the following months to see Danielle's hair become much lighter !

The new bob- time to cut you hair !this new bob has layers only on the very edges it's a rehash of the 80s Madonna bob with a modern twist. The colour is a soft beige base with fine creamy blonde highlights half of which were done only on the mid lengths of the hair this created a subtle hombre beach blond effect and then lightly waved using a GHD iron - by Glenn Stollery at Fabulous the salon 9 bay st double bay (02) 8068 8923
