I wonder when we started believing that we always need to become a better version of ourselves.

Somewhere between taking care of everyone else and trying to do everything right, we seem to have forgotten how lovely it feels to simply be.

To close our eyes, feel a little warmth, listen to the rain outside, and let the world carry on without us for a little while.

I’ve created THE FOURTH TRIMESTER FACIAL MASSAGE — a 60-minute treatment for those first precious months of motherhood, when your baby still wants to be right there with you.

Skin to skin, baby sleeping on your chest or cuddled in your arms, while I take care of you — a slow scalp massage, gentle work through the face, jaw, neck and shoulders, followed by a face mask and a massage for your hands and arms.

There’s no rushing. If baby needs to feed, settle or simply be held, we pause. The treatment fits around you both.

I smiled too, because I knew she wasn’t talking about technique.

She was talking about an old kind of knowing.

One of my favourite moments happens about ten minutes into a treatment.

At first, you can still feel the day in someone’s face and body. The shoulders are holding on. The jaw is still doing its thing. The mind, I suspect, is somewhere halfway through tomorrow’s to-do list.

And then, little by little, it all starts to give up.

The shoulders drop.
The jaw softens.
The breathing changes.

I love that moment.

Because for the next hour or so, there is nowhere else to be, nothing to organise and nobody waiting for an answer.

A client came in with a gift certificate, and when I looked at what was written on it, I couldn’t help but smile.

But there was so much love in those two little lines.

I was thinking about this today while working with a client.

We use our face all day without even noticing it. We listen, concentrate, talk, smile, react to people — and quite often hold an expression simply because the moment requires it.

Then you lie down, close your eyes, and suddenly there’s no one to look at. No conversation to follow. You don’t have to smile, respond or show how you’re feeling.

I love the moment when I feel the face begin to let go under my hands. The forehead softens, the jaw releases, even the breathing changes.

For a little while, your face doesn’t have to do anything for anyone.
