Every hairdresser remembers the mentor who truly shaped them. For me, that person was Liz Ward.
I was a meek and insecure teenager, but full of enthusiasm, creativity, and passion for hair when I started working for Liz in 2002. Liz saw that spark and nurtured every idea, not just in me, but in all of her young stylists. She threw us in the deep end in the salon, encouraged us to back ourselves, and pushed us to enter every hairdressing competition possible.
One of my proudest achievements was in 2003, when we both won in our respective categories. Liz took out both the Creative Winner and Commercial Senior titles, and I was honoured to win alongside her as Creative Apprentice and Top Regional Apprentice. She was so genuinely proud of me, a moment I’ve never forgotten.
Liz had such a beautiful way with hair. Her upstyling was clever and effortless, and her creativity and confidence were magnetic to a newbie like me. I remember feeling genuinely cared for in her salon. She wanted you to succeed, celebrated your wins as loudly as her own, and cared for her staff like a mother cares for her children.
She was strikingly beautiful, always with bright blonde hair, a glint of cheekiness in her eye, and never short on banter. A true star and a truly wonderful human.
Thank you, Liz, for shaping me into the stylist I am today, for sharing your wealth of knowledge and for just being kind. I almost gave up on this career before I met you, and I’m so grateful you took me under your wing and brought out the best in me.

This was a major transformation for my beautiful client today.. she went from a wintery brunette to a pretty sun-kissed balayage and the result was 🔥.
