Last time it was cuts...

This one is for everyone who sits down and says "just a bit lighter" or "just cover the grey", and then wonders why it came out the way it did.

🌈 Colour is where the words matter most, because the same word means different things in different salons. So here are ours.

⭐ Regrowth: The band of your own colour coming through at the roots. A six week job whether you book it or not.

⭐ Root melt: Soft, graded colour that fades out of your roots instead of stopping in a line. More time between touch ups.

⭐ Balayage: Colour painted on freehand so it grows out soft. No line at the roots, which is why it stretches longer between appointments.

⭐ Foils: The classic. Back to back blonde, sharper and brighter, and a proper craft that's getting harder to find. Add lowlights for depth.

⭐ Toner: The step at the basin that decides whether your blonde reads warm or cool. Ask for it by name and you'll get the one you meant.

One word can make all the difference...

You're allowed to ask for a specific thing when you book. That's kinda the whole deal.

But you'd be surprised how many clients come in, sit down, and say "just a trim, please", because they don't know the words for what they actually want, and they're shy about saying so once they're in the chair.

So they ask for "just a trim, please" and they get "just a trim, please". But they never really get the cut or style they wanted.

So here are some of the words that'll let your hairdresser serve you better.

⭐ A blow wave: Washed, dried and shaped with a round brush, so it sits with body and movement for days rather than hours.

⭐ A layered cut: Lengths cut into the hair so it moves and has shape. Softer, lighter, more to play with in the morning.

⭐ A solid cut: One length all the way round. Clean lines, strong shape, and it holds its look between visits.

⭐ Face-framing: The shorter pieces around the front that change how the whole cut sits.

⭐ Alternative cuts and colours: Undercuts, bold shapes, colour that isn't trying to look natural.

"How long will you really spend on it on a Tuesday morning?"

This is one of those hairdresser questions that are so obvious it takes a lifetime to learn their importance.

I'm not even joking. A simple question like this (and there are a lot of them) is the difference between giving a client the perfect cut - for them - vs a cut they'll regret 5 days out of 7.

Nikki didn't take a lifetime to learn these questions though. She seems to have learned them all naturally, and it's why I couldn't be happier to have her start with me at the salon this month.

She's a fully qualified hairdresser and she's been plying her trade for over a decade.

After 40+ years hairdressing, I can tell you, that question makes a lot of us nervous. But Asha looks forward to it.
