SECOND CHANCE SUNDAY
School avoidance rarely begins with a child refusing to go to school.
More often, it starts quietly.
A child who suddenly complains of tummy aches before school.
A child who becomes unusually worried on Sunday evenings.
A child who struggles to sleep, cries more, or begins asking to stay at home.
These early changes are often the brain’s way of saying, something doesn’t feel safe.
When we recognise the signs early, we have a much greater opportunity to understand what is driving them and to offer support before anxiety becomes more deeply established.
In today’s post, I explain how school avoidance often develops, why it isn’t a choice, and why looking beyond the behaviour is so important.
I’d love to hear from you. Looking back, what were the first signs you noticed?

Water has a gentle way of bringing us back to ourselves.
Its steady rhythm reminds us to slow down, breathe deeply, and let go of what we don’t need to carry in this moment.
Sometimes the most healing thing we can do is simply pause and be present.
In a world that celebrates being busy, don’t underestimate the power of stillness.

The difference between fitting in and belonging is something we see every day in therapy. 💛
So many people spend years trying to be who they think others need them to be—quieter, stronger, more agreeable, less emotional—just to feel accepted.
But true belonging isn’t about changing yourself. It’s about finding spaces where you can show up as your authentic self and know that you’re enough.
At Hinterland House, we hope to create that kind of space. A place where you don’t have to earn your worth or wear a mask. You’re seen, heard, and accepted just as you are.
Because everyone deserves to belong. 🌿

Like many people, I’ve been curious about what AI can create. So I decided to use it to help bring something that’s been in my heart for a long time into a visual form.
While AI helped with the design, the ideas, the meaning, and the heart behind every word are deeply personal to Hinterland House.
Our logo has always represented more than just a name. The house symbolises the safe space we hope to offer. The heart at the centre represents the belief that beneath every experience, every struggle, and every story is a person longing to be seen, understood, and cared for.
The Seasons of the house hint at a new program coming in August.
These flyers are our way of sharing what Hinterland House is really about—not just counselling, but creating a place where people can reconnect with themselves, feel supported, and find hope again.
