LAND OF OPPORTUNITY UK nationals Chris Forde and wife Caroline Christopher landed in Australia with their six-month-old son and eight suitcases, ready to build a new life here.
Fourteen years and two more sons - Koby and Cruz - later they've done just that.
The Victor Harbor-based barber and hairdresser duo have opened seven unisex Back N Sides barber shops and colour rooms across regional South Australia,
in-
cluding in Victor Harbor and Mt Gambier, and are readying to open their eighth salon over the border in Warrnam-bool this month, with plans also for an outlet in Kadina on the Yorke Peninsula this year.
The proud dad, now 47, says he still pinches himself about the life his chosen country has afforded he and his family, Jayden, now 14, Koby, Il, and Cruz, 7
"I love Australia. It's giving us a dream life ... to live this close to the ocean," he says.
But it hasn't all been plain sailing.
"We had $5000 left to our names when I found a barber shop for sale in Goolwa,"
Chris says.
"It was a tiny little shop and super cheap ... I spent the money we had on it."
He wells with emotion recalling how warmly he was received by locals.
"I had a big Australian flag on the wall and locals starting coming in .. they could see I was a Pom, you know, they were taking the p**s out of me and all that but the message was there," he says.
"They could see I was giving it a go and they wanted to get behind me - and they did.
"If you're willing to have a go and take Australia in your arms and give it a hug - and you show that to Australians - they love you for it."
