As a wildlife trauma specialist and rescuer, what is happening is absolutely devastating.

The vegetation being cleared along Urraween Rd/Doolong Road was providing critical refuge for wildlife. Due to the “tunnel effect” through Kawungan Way, many animals have already been displaced from surrounding habitat and have been relying on these remaining vegetation areas for shelter, food, and safe movement. With these trees now being removed, many animals simply have nowhere left to go.

I have been in constant contact with the RSPCA QLD, who have been liaising with DETSI regarding the impacts on local wildlife. In speaking with State MP David Lee MP, I understand that wildlife-sensitive road and infrastructure design guidelines, such as those outlined in the TMR Fauna Sensitive Road Design Manual, are currently recommendations rather than mandatory requirements. Their implementation relies on support and action at the local government level.

The impacts this is having on our wildlife are significant and cannot continue to be ignored. I have emailed Mayor George Seymour - Fraser Coast twice expressing my concerns and have not yet received a response. Thankfully, there are now more people supporting these concerns, and I am hopeful that together we can push for meaningful change.
