Maiden hair extensions

Nothing prepares you for the transition from salon girly to “can you please approve this by COB.”… 🤣

This might sound like simple advice, but it can completely change the way you think about your colour wall.

Sometimes we focus on “What shade do I install the most as a full head?” when a more useful question might be: “Which shade does the most work in my salon?”

The colour you use for 150g installs might feel like the obvious one to stock. But look at the shade you’re constantly pulling to add depth, brightness, contrast, highlights or lowlights across completely different clients. That colour might actually be doing far more for your business.

Something you can do today: look back at your last 10–20 extension clients and notice which shades kept appearing in your colour work, even when they weren’t the main colour.

If you don’t have that information, watch your next 5–10 clients instead. Every time you reach for another shade to change the colour result, take note.

You might start seeing the same few shades over and over.

Sometimes your most valuable colour isn’t the one you install the most of. It’s the one you can do the most with.

Think of a healthy strand of hair like a smooth piece of wire.
Now think of a damaged one more like barbed wire.
Your hair has an outside protective layer called the cuticle. When that cuticle is healthy and smooth, strands can slide past each other relatively easily.

But the ends of your natural hair have been through everything, colouring, heat, brushing, washing and everyday wear.

As they become damaged, that outside surface can become rough, lifted and uneven.

Now put those rough natural ends inside a head of extensions.

Your extensions and your natural hair are moving together all day, every day. So instead of your natural ends sliding smoothly through the extension hair, they have more reason to catch onto it.

One catches another.
Another strand gets involved.
And eventually, everything starts intertwining.

That’s why your hairdresser wants to trim your natural ends before putting in extensions.

She isn’t just “cleaning up” your haircut.

She’s removing some of the roughest hair that’s about to spend the next few months living amongst your extensions.

Sometimes the hair causing the tangle isn’t the extension hair at all.
