CoQ10

I’ve often heard about CoQ10 and how amazing and important it can be to supplement with, but I never knew what it was or why we need it!! So I’ve done some homework and hope it helps you too.

Firstly it’s name! Coenzyme Q 10… did you know Co was short for Coenzyme???

In a very small nutshell - CoQ10 can help support a healthy cardiovascular system, maintain healthy Cholesterol, and protect cells from free radical damage.

In a much larger sciencey nutshell, here's the nitty gritty....explains why I’ve not understood about it before! VERY clever stuff!

A co-enzyme is a molecule that helps an enzyme enable a chemical reaction that normally would not take place easily.

An enzyme is a protein, a co-enzyme is a small non protein molecule.

A vitamin is an essential chemical that we need for normal metabolism, some vitamins are co-enzymes.

Coenzyme Q 10 is so called because it is made of ubiquinone, (think like ubiquitous, pretty much everywhere) hence the Q, and 10 because it has 10 isoprenyl (this one went a bit over my head… you may need to google it yourself!) units in its tail.

It occurs in every cell in the body with greater amounts in high energy organs like the heart, liver, and kidney.

We can make it in our own bodies and get it from food. It is synthesised in our bodies from 2 amino acids, and acetyl-co A, and a “condensation” process that joins them together. The reason we are sometimes deficient is failure to make enough, perhaps because of a gene mutation, (12 genes are needed to make it), or needing larger amounts by certain organs.

Coenzyme Q10 exists in three forms in the body, and each form can change into one of the other forms depending on the electrons it is carrying. From food and supplements the ubiquinol form is thought to be better absorbed (this is the form in our CoQ10!!).

1. Ubiquinone, an oxidised form.

2. Ubisemiquinone, a partly oxidised form.

3. Ubiquinol, a reduced form.

• Ubiquinone can carry two electrons, and give them up and thus changes to ubiquinol

• Ubisemiquinone can transport 1 electron and change to ubiquinone or ubiquinol depending on whether it gives up that one electron and becomes ubiquinol (reduced) or picks up another electron and becomes ubiquinone (oxidised).

This transport of electrons is a vital part of cell respiration and ATP energy production. It occurs in the mitochondria of the cell and is vital for life.
