In high school I would get the occasional breakout but I learnt how to treat it and didn’t have many big skin problems.
Then in 2017 I changed birth control methods and within a couple of months my skin changed, at first I was getting a few small breakouts. But as the weeks went on it got worst, at first I wasn’t too stressed my body had just had a massive hormonal change and my body was adjusting to that right?
I wish I took photos of my skin back then because I haven’t ever had my skin look like that before, it was sore, inflamed, itchy and cystic acne all on the lower half of my face. This continued for about 8 months of it being like that I was using skincare, trying treatments and then I gave in and stopped the new birth control. My skin did heal but I was left with a lot of scaring.
Then 2020 happened, between covid lockdowns, starting a new job, planning a wedding, and changing skincare ranges my skin flared up again. This is when I noticed that stress was a trigger for my skin. I was getting married at the end of 2021 so I was on mission to clear my skin. I did different skin treatments and products. This time I went to a doctor and I was given a prescription for a retinoid. By the time my wedding came around my skin was clear again. This time around I didn’t have any scarring because what I had learnt from the first time around was to do anything possible to avoid picking at my skin.
In June of 2022 I moved to Mackay and the stress once again got to my skin, the move, starting a new job. It never got as bad as it had the last 2 times but it was happening. I gave it a few months of doing what I normally did to see if that would work this time and after a few months of that I had enough and approached it a different way.
I stopped using everything and worked on my skin barrier and ensured that was repaired before I started to do anything else to it.
By going back to basics my skin had a chance to repair from all the trauma and the multiple things I was throwing at it.
My skin barrier’s health has been my main focus since and I have had very minimum problem with acne since, its not perfect but it is in a happier, healthier place.

To start off the month we wanted to share some common causes of acne.
Acne can be overwhelming and we like to be as transparent with clients as possible.
Maybe you’re getting excess oil production that is worsening your acne because your barrier is stripped… maybe that pimple needs to be extracted but you’re scared it will cause scaring.
