🦴 Why Is the Multifidus Muscle So Important?

The Multifidus is one of the most important deep muscles of the spine, yet it is often overlooked because it lies beneath the larger back muscles.

Why Massage Doesn’t Always Need to Be Done Exactly Where It Hurts

Many people are surprised when they come in with neck pain, shoulder pain, or pain between the shoulder blades, and the massage is not focused only on the painful area.

You might wonder:

“My neck hurts — why are you working on my chest?”

“My shoulder hurts — why are you treating my back?”

The answer is simple: the body is connected.

Our bodies are not just a collection of separate muscles. Everything is connected through a network of connective tissue called fascia.

Fascia surrounds and connects muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and organs throughout the body. Think of it like a web that links everything together.

When one area becomes tight, restricted, or overloaded, it can affect other areas of the body.

For example:

🌿 Neck pain may be related to tight chest muscles.

🌿 Shoulder pain may be connected to poor posture or restricted movement in the upper back.

🌿 Pain between the shoulder blades may be related to how the shoulder blades move or how you sit at a desk.

🌿 Lower back pain may sometimes be influenced by tight hips, shoulders, or fascial restrictions elsewhere in the body.

This is why the area that hurts is not always the area causing the problem.

Many times, the painful area is simply working harder to compensate for something happening somewhere else.

As massage therapists, our goal is not only to reduce pain but also to understand why the body is under stress in the first place.

By looking at posture, movement patterns, muscle balance, and fascial connections, we can often find contributing factors that may be overlooked when focusing only on the painful spot.

✨ The place that hurts is not always the source of the problem.

✨ The body works as one connected system.

✨ Treating the cause often provides longer-lasting results than treating the symptom alone.

Sometimes the best treatment is not where the pain is — but where the restriction began.

The body works like one connected chain.
When one area becomes tight or weak, the rest of the body starts compensating.
That’s why shoulder, hip, knee, and foot problems are often connected together.
