September and October are bringing two beautiful opportunities to come together around curls, texture and community.
On 20 September, Hair Freedom Expo brings people together to celebrate coily, kinky and curly hair. Hosted by Enable Women Africa
Then on 6 October, I’ll be hosting another Curls Connection, an event close to my heart. This time, it will be Textured and Seen edition, created to build greater understanding around tight textured hair through education, shared experiences and live demonstrations.
You don’t need to have tight textured hair yourself to be part of these events. If you want to learn, understand and better support the people around you, you are welcome.

So, you’ve consulted your client, done hair training, you know the techniques you have to work with.
Now what?
It's time to get to know curly hair itself.
There are characteristics of the hair in front of you that can completely change how you approach the haircut you’ve planned.
Because knowing how to cut curls is one thing. Knowing what you’re looking at, what it means, and how it should influence the choices you make is another.

Say it with me: your guest’s understanding of their own hair should be just as important as the result you create for them.
Of course, learn your techniques. Learn how to cut, style and work with different curls. But don’t stop with educating just yourself.
Share that knowledge with the person sitting in your chair. Explain what you’re doing and why. Show them what you’re noticing about their hair and help them understand what works for their curls.
Because they’re the ones who will be caring for their curls after they leave your chair.
A beautiful result is wonderful. Giving someone the understanding to work with their own curls is even better.

Not every stylist wants to specialise in curls, and that’s okay. But most of us will have a curl guest sit in our chair at some point, and I want you to feel confident when they do.
For me, curl education isn’t about learning as many techniques as possible. There isn’t one go-to approach that will work for every curl guest. It’s about understanding why curls behave the way they do, so you can make sense of the techniques you’re learning and adapt them to the person sitting in front of you.
That’s how I approach Curl Identity Education. We start with understanding the curls rather than trying to perfect a technique, then build from there.
