The unfortunate truth of owning and running a business.

Running a business is really hard and awesome and scary and exhilarating it’s a roller coaster and sometimes roller coasters crash and sometimes they are the best ride of your life

What they don’t tell you is that it can cause severe stress and anxiety, and drain you mentally to the point of depression in even the most laid-back people. They don’t tell you that just like it takes a village to raise a child it takes a tribe to make it in business and stay sane with your relationships intact.

People will talk about you, compare you to others, and use you, they will view you as a service and not a person anymore. Others will move heaven and earth to help you, open doors that would otherwise remain closed, give you advice that you don’t want but that you need to hear, and pick up the phone just to listen when you need it most. So choose your circle wisely and pay it forward when others lift you up

Some Friends and family will expect discounts and other people will value you and your hard work less than a much bigger and established business. You will have to earn your stripes and prove you are a safe choice and the best fit. Know your worth and remember if they can’t outwork you then they can’t beat you. Never compete on price it is a race to the bottom.

Some of us think you have to worry about if you forget to email/message someone back, are they going to think it was on purpose? Did you disappoint them? Will they hold that against you? When in reality you just can’t get to everyone’s messages and emails. Don’t overthink it, own your mistakes, keep your promises but don’t promise lightly, give yourself breathing room and cut yourself a break

Starting up and running a successful business puts incredible strain on personal lives and relationships, many of which fail because there is just often no work life balance. You need to be the director, the worker, the admin, the marketing team, the accountant, and the cleaner..... All whilst being a parent, a husband or a wife, family support, a friend... it’s one of the hardest things you will try and balance so don’t. Work-life balance is a lie - know what the trade-offs are, and have honest conversations with your friends, family, partners, and children. They will be your biggest cheerleaders if you let them behind the curtain.

There’s a reason you don’t see many people succeed in small businesses after 5 years. If they are successful they are often overwhelmed. It takes a toll. It’s freaking exhausting. Especially the past couple of years when so much has been out of our control. Watch for the honest ones, the ones who ask for help and acknowledge the sacrifices they made to get where they are. They have the map and it just might save you some angst along your own journey

Here’s a small reminder that we are just normal people with hectic lives. Be kind, be patient, and support small businesses…….and hopefully more of us will stick around! We know it’s not your job to save us but we appreciate the kind words, the check-ins, and the love that you share when you choose to spend your hard-earned money with us, it does not go unnoticed and often it is the bright moment in Our day that keeps us going.

I copied this from another small business owner and adapted it because whilst life is sometimes hard we all write our own life stories. We all have our rough days and it’s ok to wallow in them but do not unpack and live there.
