Why does your vitiligo look more noticeable in some photos โ€” and almost disappear in others? ๐Ÿค”
The answer may simply be lighting and contrast.

In this Short, we look at how vitiligo can appear under:
โ˜€๏ธ Natural sunlight
๐Ÿ  Indoor lighting
๐Ÿ“ธ Camera flash
๐Ÿ”ฆ Woodโ€™s lamp

Different lighting can change the contrast between vitiligo patches and surrounding skin, making patches appear more or less visible โ€” even though your skin itself hasn't suddenly changed.

So don't judge the progress of your vitiligo from one photo. For a more accurate comparison, try to use similar lighting, angles and camera settings each time.

Can Vitamin B12 Reverse Vitiligo? | What Does the Evidence Say?

Can vitamin B12 bring pigment back to skin affected by vitiligo?
Itโ€™s a question that comes up frequently, and the answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no.

Some research has found lower vitamin B12 levels in people with vitiligo, which has led scientists to investigate whether B12 supplementation could play a role in repigmentation.

But having a B12 deficiency is not the same as B12 being a treatment for vitiligo.

In this post, we look at:
๐Ÿ”น Why B12 has been linked to vitiligo
๐Ÿ”น What the research tells us about supplementation
๐Ÿ”น Why treating a B12 deficiency is still important
๐Ÿ”น Why B12 shouldn't be considered a proven way to reverse vitiligo

The takeaway: Vitamin B12 is an important nutrient, but there isn't currently enough evidence to say that B12 supplementation can reliably reverse vitiligo or restore lost pigmentation.

Good questions deserve good evidence. ๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŒฑ Why Are Hair Follicles Important in Vitiligo Repigmentation?

Did you know your hair follicles may play an important role when pigment begins to return?

Hair follicles are associated with melanocyte stem cells โ€” cells that can give rise to new melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin.

One pattern we sometimes see is called follicular repigmentation. This is when small spots of pigment begin appearing around individual hair follicles. Over time, these areas may gradually expand and merge as pigmentation returns.

This helps explain why repigmentation can sometimes appear as small dots or islands of colour before becoming more even.

But hair follicles are only part of the story. Repigmentation can depend on several factors, including the location of the vitiligo, disease activity and the skin's ability to support new pigment-producing cells.

Even white hairs within a vitiligo patch don't necessarily mean that repigmentation is impossible โ€” the biology of pigmentation is more complex than what we can see on the surface.

๐Ÿ’™ The takeaway: There is a lot happening beneath the skin when pigment begins to return.

Understanding these processes helps us better understand vitiligo and the remarkable way our skin can regain pigment.

WHY DOES THE IMMUNE SYSTEM ATTACK MELANOCYTES?

It's one of the biggest questions people ask when they're diagnosed with vitiligo:

โ€œWhy would my own immune system attack my skin?โ€
Vitiligo is associated with an immune response that mistakenly targets melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin and help give our skin its colour.

But there isn't one simple answer to why this happens.
Scientists believe several factors may be involved, including genetic susceptibility, oxidative stress, changes in melanocytes and signals between the skin and immune system.

What we do know is this:
๐Ÿ’™ You didn't cause your vitiligo.
๐Ÿ’™ It isn't caused by being โ€œdirtyโ€ or having poor hygiene.
๐Ÿ’™ Your immune system is responding to your melanocytes as though they are a threat.

The more we understand the relationship between melanocytes and the immune system, the more we can understand vitiligo itself.
Because vitiligo is about more than what we see on the surface.

WHY DOES HAIR TURN WHITE IN VITILIGO? ๐Ÿค
Vitiligo doesn't always affect the skin alone.

The same pigment-producing cells, melanocytes are also involved in giving our hair its colour.

When vitiligo affects the hair follicles, hair growing within an area of vitiligo can lose its pigment and appear white. This is known as leukotrichia.

And here's where the science gets fascinatingโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ”ฌ

Hair follicles contain melanocyte stem cells, an important reservoir of cells involved in pigment production. Understanding these cells helps researchers learn more about how pigmentation is lost, and how repigmentation may occur.

So that small patch of white hair may tell us more than we realise about what's happening beneath the skin.

Vitiligo is about more than what we see on the surface.

๐ŸŒฟ Whatโ€™s inside your skincare?

Meet Kalahari melon oil, a botanical oil derived from the seeds of the Kalahari melon.

Naturally rich in linoleic acid and vitamin E, it helps nourish and condition the skin while supporting its natural moisture barrier.

Even more interesting? ๐ŸŒฑ The seeds are dried and cold-pressed to produce the oil.

Itโ€™s one of the carefully selected ingredients in Vitiloxยฎ Pigmentation Cream.

Why does skin lose its pigment?
It starts with the immune system.

In vitiligo, the immune system mistakenly targets melanocytes โ€” the cells responsible for producing melanin.

When melanocytes are lost, areas of skin lose their pigment and characteristic white patches can appear.

Most importantly: Vitiligo isn't caused by poor hygiene, neglect, or something you did wrong.

Itโ€™s not your fault!

๐—ช๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป?

Itโ€™s the pigment behind your skinโ€™s colour.

Melanin is produced by specialised cells called melanocytes. It helps give your ๐˜€๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป, ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ฟ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ฒ๐˜†๐—ฒ๐˜€ their colour, and it also helps protect your skin from UV radiation.

So when we talk about pigmentation, melanin is at the heart of the story.

And understanding melanin is an important first step in understanding what happens in vitiligo.

**What if your skin was a pigment factory?**

Think of melanocytes as the tiny workers responsible for producing, the pigment that gives your skin its colour.

In vitiligo, the immune system mistakenly targets these cells, disrupting pigment production in affected areas.

This simple factory metaphor helps explain whatโ€™s happening beneath the skin, and why understanding vitiligo matters.
Because itโ€™s more than just a change in skin colour.

**Vitiligo doesnโ€™t define you. Understanding it can empower your journey.**
