AN OPEN LETTER TO THE UNITED NATIONS HIGH COMMISIONER FOR REFUGEES (UNHCR), GENEVA, SWITZERLAND

Ref.: Plight of the Nuer South Sudanese Refugees in the Gambella Regional State of
Ethiopia

Excellency, the High Commissioner,

We the Nuer Community in Diaspora petition the UNHCR to take immediate action to save the lives of the Nuer South Sudanese Refugees currently living in the Refugee Camps in Gambella Regional State of Ethiopia. These Refugees have not had food ration distribution for the last five Months and people are literary dying of hunger and starvation. So far, more than 215 children and adults have died particularly in Pinyudo, in Gog District and Kule & Nguony-Yiel Camps in Itang District. To add insult to injury these camps have been besieged by Anywaa Armed Militants because of their conflict with the Ethiopian Nuers. These Anywaa Militants don’t differentiate the South Sudanese Nuer Refugees from the Ethiopian Nuers, with whom they have been involved in bloody conflict since May this Year and have been attacking the Refugee Camps killing children, men and women; and literary besieging the Camps thereby preventing the movement of the refugees, even to look for wild foods in the bush. As a result people are dying helplessly and the Nuer community members in the Diaspora are heartbroken watching this man-made tragedy unfolding.

Excellency,

We are not privy to what has prompted the UNHCR and the WFP to stop the food ration for the last five Months. But whatever the reason, many lives are being lost because of the “withholding” of the food rations. Moreover, the Ethiopian Government has failed to protect these refugees, it kindly given asylum and pledge to protect according to the Geneva Convention. As a result many Nuer Refugees are dying in the hands of these cruel militants, who have also curtailed the ability of the refugees to search for wild foods leading to widespread starvation in the Camps. We believe these are human right violations of unseen and unimaginable proportions.
So, we appeal to your Excellency to stop this violation by ordering immediate distribution of food rations in these camps and provide emergency medical assistance to the sick, as well as, to call upon the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) to honor its pledge to protect the refugees or else relocate the Refugees to any other neighboring countries willing to host them.

: Dr. John G*i Yoh: The ideal choice for the top diplomat position in the country

By Emmanuel Malou Deng

A few weeks ago, His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit relieved Hon. Mayiik Ayii Deng of his duties as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Deputy Minister Hon. Deng Dau was directed as Acting Minister while the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) searches for a suitable replacement. As the Chairman of SPLM conducts his search, I strongly recommend Dr. John G*i Yoh to be appointed as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs.

As our country moves towards peace and elections, we must equally improve our relationships with nations of significance to us. To achieve this goal, we need a new top diplomat who comprehends the intricacies of geopolitics and geoeconomics. In my opinion, Dr. Yoh is one of the most capable candidates for this role.

Dr. John G*i Yoh possesses the necessary qualifications and experience to effectively execute this vital position. From 2013 to 2016, he served as both Minister of General Education and Minister of Higher Education, a period in which our educational system was greatly improved, from the prevention of National Examination malpractice to the improvement of various government universities. For example, Professor John Akech, who later improved the University of Juba greatly, was appointed by him as a result of his recommendation.

Additionally, he was a Presidential Advisor to H.E. President Salva Kiir. Dr. John G*i Yoh is also a distinguished figure in the field of geopolitics, having previously served as an ambassador to Turkey and taught as a professor at various foreign universities. These experiences have fostered his knowledge and understanding of international relations.

Furthermore and more importantly, Dr. John G*i Yoh is a loyal and dedicated member of the SPLM. He has shown a deep commitment to the President's agenda and policies.

We recommend you our beloved son ._John_Gach
