What does cupping actually do?

Cupping uses gentle suction to lift the skin and superficial soft tissue.

One way we explain it in clinic is that it may create a temporary “decompression” effect through tight or restricted areas. Instead of pushing down like traditional massage, cupping pulls upward.

This may help influence local blood flow, pressure sensitivity, tissue glide, and how the nervous system perceives tightness.

The circular marks can look dramatic, but they are usually a normal skin response to suction. Darker marks do not automatically mean more damage, more toxins, or a better result.

At Myonexis Health Group, cupping may be used as part of Myotherapy or Remedial Massage when it suits the person, the area being treated, and the goal of the session.

It can be used to support people dealing with back tightness, muscle tension, training recovery, or general restricted movement.

Treatment should always match the person, not just the technique.

This what a focused session of myotherapy looks like

Dry needling works by inducing injury signals in the brain to start a process in the area to repair damaged tissue with new, healthy tissues

In the video we can see the therapist starts with massage to get the client's body comfortable and ready.

Needles are then inserted to the areas targeted to repair damaged muscles and areas with myofascial trigger point.

The therapist may also slide the needle in and out a few times to adjust needle placement for better positioning in the trigger points.

A twitch response may occur in these trigger point when the needles are inserted.

This response is desirable and something we look for when needling.

Post treatment soreness is to be expected to be felt up to 24-48 hours.

This is a normal outcome, and can be minimised with light mobility work and drinking plenty of water

Stay tuned for more about dry needling

Dry needling is a technique that uses acupuncture needles injected directly into a myofascial trigger point (“knots”), which is effective in reducing pain and increasing range of motion.

This safe and effective method is something to consider having alongside your physical therapy treatment plan. Definitely give it a try if you haven’t already 👍
