Did your little one love meeting Mr. Pickles during their visit to Sien Hair?
Mr. Pickles has been told that there are quite a few little people out there who are still talking about him… and he’d LOVE to say hello!
💛 We’ve already had lots of lovely little Mr. Pickles fans keen for their own personalised shout-out! If your child has a soft spot for our scaly salon sidekick, and you’d love a personalised shout-out for them, send us a little DM to let us know.
And just in case your little one was one of the Mr. Pickles fans who mentioned it to us and we’ve accidentally forgotten… please give us a little reminder! 🦎💬

We have a new phone number dedicated just for Sien Hair ☎️ 0468 189 399 ☎️
Please delete the old number and save this in your contacts..
During salon hours answering calls can be tricky, so please send a text - either Ashleigh or Kelly will get back to you ASAP!
However if it’s urgent, please stay on the line after our welcome message- one of us will either answer or call you straight back.. 💛
Holding a child while they’re getting a haircut isn’t always traumatic. In fact, sometimes it can be incredibly comforting, especially for sensory seeking legends.
What matters is why they’re being held, who is supporting them, and whether they’re still being listened to.
Our little master J had complete autonomy throughout his haircut. We followed his lead the entire time, paying attention to the subtle cues he gave us like making a sound, moving his head away from me, or shifting his position.
Previously, haircuts had been incredibly traumatic and painful, yet when he visited me he was calm and even seemed to enjoy much of the process!
To help support this and keep him feeling regulated..
💛 We changed positions whenever he needed.
💛 We took breaks.
💛 We counted to 5 while I was cutting every section so he knew exactly when I was starting… and exactly when I would stop.
💛 We kept the haircut predictable.
💛We made sure to keep dusting the fallen hair away from his skin and clothes after each snip.
💛 We used movement to help regulate (yes… including a giant banana 🍌😂).
There was no rushing. No “just get it done.” No expectation for him to sit perfectly still.
Just communication, trust, flexibility and meeting him where he was.
The result was a successful haircut, a regulated child, and a family who know that their precious boy left feeling seen instead of judged.
This is what sensory-safe hairdressing looks like.
I’d love to know… is this how you imagined children’s haircuts to look like? 👇
One of the biggest misconceptions about children is that if something worked once, it should work every time.
But kids don’t work like that.
And neither do sensory needs.
A child who sat beautifully for a haircut last month might struggle today.
A child who found clippers funny last visit might find them overwhelming this time.
A child who happily wore a cape yesterday might refuse it completely next week.
And that’s okay.
This was Freddy’s third visit to Sien Hair.
His first visit was challenging.
His second visit had me outside laying on the concrete and following him around as he watered my car tyres.
And this week, with the support of his Baba, Dad, and a flexible approach, we achieved his most successful haircut yet.
Not because we expected him to adapt to the salon.
Because we adapted to him.
Sometimes sensory-safe haircuts look like sitting still.
Sometimes they look like cartoons, sing-along, movement breaks, changing positions, family support, and a hairdresser willing to think outside the box.
Progress isn’t perfection.
Progress is feeling safe enough to come back.

Not hair related, but something that’s deeply important to me is the village that surrounds me.
Over the last 6 years, my neighbour has cooked for me more times than I could ever count.
When I’ve worked late nights.
When I’ve been overwhelmed.
When I’ve been sick.
When I’ve forgotten to properly look after myself.
Tonight, while recovering from a virus herself, she realised I was unwell and dropped homemade food at my door again.
There’s something incredibly healing about being cared for when you feel depleted. Especially as a solo parent and small business owner, where life can sometimes feel like constant output.
These photos are only a tiny fraction of the meals she’s made over the years -soups, curries, roasted vegetables, noodles, little comfort meals and “eat this while it’s hot” deliveries.
Just a reminder that community care still exists, and being looked after when you’re unwell means so much..
Sometimes love looks like a container of soup left at your front door ❤️
Stay warm and well out there!
