Lipedema is not just a simple fat problem. Behind this condition lies a deeper issue involving an imbalance in estrogen receptors in the body. In simple terms, there are two main regulators: ERα, which helps maintain healthy fat metabolism, and ERβ, which can trigger problems when it becomes too dominant. In lipedema, this balance shifts, ERα decreases while ERβ becomes dominant. As a result, fat cells enlarge, inflammation develops, tissue becomes hardened (fibrosis), and normal metabolic processes are disrupted.
What makes this condition more complex is that lipedema fat can become self active. The fat tissue has the ability to produce estrogen locally. This means that even when overall hormone levels in the body drop, such as after menopause, the affected areas continue to stay active. As a result, fat keeps accumulating and inflammation does not stop, allowing the condition to progress over time.
The impact goes beyond fat accumulation. This hormonal imbalance triggers multiple changes within the body’s tissues. Fat cells stop functioning properly, low grade inflammation persists, fibrotic tissue forms, and the lymphatic system becomes impaired. These processes explain the common symptoms of lipedema, including pain, swelling, heaviness, and the difficulty of reducing fat in specific areas despite diet and exercise.
Interestingly, lipedema shares similarities with other estrogen related conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and adenomyosis. The common link is excess local estrogen activity and a reduced response to progesterone. This suggests that lipedema is part of a broader pattern of hormone driven disorders rather than an isolated condition.
Unlike many estrogen related conditions, lipedema often worsens after menopause. As systemic estrogen levels decline, their protective effects are reduced, while ERβ dominance becomes stronger. This leads to increased fat accumulation, more severe pain and swelling, and a higher risk of progressing into more complex stages such as lipolymphedema.
Because of this, treatment approaches are evolving. Instead of focusing only on symptoms, newer strategies aim to address the underlying causes. Hormonal therapies, such as certain progestins, and metabolic treatments like tirzepatide are being explored as part of a more comprehensive approach. These methods complement traditional treatments such as compression therapy and surgery.
In conclusion, lipedema should be understood as a hormone influenced condition, not just excess fat. The root cause lies in estrogen receptor imbalance and local estrogen production within fat tissue, leading to chronic inflammation, fibrosis, and lymphatic dysfunction. With this understanding, treatment can become more targeted and effective.
Beautiful Women 🌼
I wasn’t going to post, but as I’m getting so many appointment requests, I feel I should say something?
I lost the love of my life, the rarest person ive ever known on Friday 9th January….my Mummy.
We were blessed to celebrated her 93rd birthday on Monday the 5th. She had a beautiful day and felt fine.
By Wednesday 7th her chronic leukemia turned acute and aggressive. She had no pain and passed in her sleep. Cognitive to the end.
I can’t stop the tears, i really cant.
I hope to be practicing again in a couple of weeks and shall reach out to you all.
Love
Kate ❤️💔
Ladies of the Lounge
A BIG THANK YOU 🥰🥰.
It’s been a draining year, yes pun intended 🤣.
Yes i love my work, but i wanted to let EACH and EVERY ONE of you know how grateful i am, how much i appreciate you. Not just for the business you bring, but the friendships we have built on common ground, for your knowledge, your insight. I absolutely LOVE how much i learn from all of you and you definitely keep me on my toes (yes another pun 🙄).
Books are back open from 12th January ( year of the fire horse apparently).
Happy Happy New Year, let’s hope for a good one yes!!

Post Surgical Lymphatic Drainage is vital. Pre surgery lymphatic drainage softens the tissue, making an easier surgery, establishes new lymphatic pathways. Both pre and post operative lymphatic drainage evoke a faster recovery - Kate ❤️🌼
Why Surgery Changes the Lymphatic System (And Why Your Body Feels Different After)
This is an article many people didn’t know they needed —
until they read it and quietly say, “This explains everything.”
Surgery can be life-saving.
It can be necessary.
It can be the reason you are still here.
But what is rarely explained is how surgery changes the lymphatic system — sometimes permanently — and why the body may never feel the same afterward unless it’s supported correctly.
🌿 Surgery doesn’t only cut skin — it interrupts flow
The lymphatic system is made up of delicate vessels, valves, and nodes that run just beneath the skin and through connective tissue.
During surgery:
• Lymph vessels are cut or cauterised
• Nodes may be disturbed or removed
• Fascia is incised and heals with restriction
• Nerve communication is altered
Unlike blood vessels, lymph vessels are not always repaired or reconnected.
The body adapts — but adaptation is not the same as optimal flow.
🌿 Scar tissue changes drainage pathways
Scar tissue is not just a surface issue.
Internally, scars can:
• Pull on fascia
• Compress lymph vessels
• Create directional blockages
• Force lymph to reroute inefficiently
This is why swelling often appears above, below, or far away from the scar, not only at the surgical site.
The body isn’t confused — it’s compensating.
🌿 Common surgeries that impact lymph flow
Many people are surprised by how common this is:
• C-sections
• Appendectomy
• Gallbladder surgery
• Abdominal or pelvic surgery
• Breast surgery
• Orthopaedic surgery
• Brain or spinal surgery
Even surgeries done years or decades ago can influence today’s lymphatic patterns.
Time does not automatically restore flow.
🌿 “I healed… but I was never the same”
This is one of the most common phrases we hear.
After surgery, people may notice:
• A swollen or heavy abdomen
• An apron belly that won’t shift
• One-sided swelling
• Chronic inflammation
• Fluid retention
• Increased sensitivity to stress
This does not mean the surgery failed.
It means the lymphatic system was never fully supported afterward.
🌿 The nervous system remembers surgery
Surgery is a physical and neurological event.
The nervous system may remain in a protective state long after healing appears complete. When this happens:
• Lymph vessels remain constricted
• Drainage slows
• Inflammation lingers
The body must feel safe again before it will release.
This is why gentle, calming, rhythmical therapies are often far more effective than aggressive approaches post-surgery.
🌿 The good news — flow can be improved
While scars cannot be erased, function can be restored.
Supportive approaches may include:
• Manual lymphatic drainage
• Scar mobilisation
• Fascia-focused work
• Breath-based techniques
• Nervous system regulation
• Gentle, consistent movement
Healing after surgery is not about pushing harder —
it’s about restoring communication and flow.
💚 A message your body wants you to hear
Your body didn’t betray you.
Your body adapted to survive.
And with the right support, it can learn to flow again.
If you’ve ever felt:
“I healed… but something changed”
This article is for you.

🌿 Food & the Lymphatic System: What Helps… and What Hurts?
A Fun, Science-Backed Guide to Eating for Better Lymph Flow 🍏✨
Your lymphatic system is like the quiet hero of your body — moving waste, inflammation, hormones, toxins, and immune cells all day long.
But here’s the secret: your lymph LOVES certain foods… and absolutely hates others.
Let’s break it down in a fun, Lymphie-approved way! 💚
🍃 Top Lymph-Loving Foods
These foods support drainage, reduce inflammation, and keep your lymph flowing like a river instead of a traffic jam.
🥒 1. Hydrating Foods (Your lymph is 96% water!)
• Cucumber
• Celery
• Lettuce
• Citrus fruits
• Watermelon
• Bone broth
Hydration = thinner fluid. Thinner fluid = better flow.
🍋 2. Citrus & Vitamin C–Rich Fruits
They break down sticky proteins that clog lymph fluid.
• Lemons
• Oranges
• Grapefruit
• Kiwi
• Pineapple (bromelain reduces swelling!)
🌿 3. Bitter & Liver-Supporting Foods
Because the liver filters lymph!
• Rocket / Arugula
• Dandelion greens
• Bitter melon
• Kale
• Broccoli sprouts
🔥 4. Anti-Inflammatory Herbs & Spices
These reduce the inflammatory load that overwhelms the lymphatic system.
• Turmeric
• Ginger
• Fenugreek
• Oregano
• Cinnamon
• Garlic
🫐 5. Antioxidant-Rich Berries
They fight oxidative stress that thickens lymph fluid.
• Blueberries
• Raspberries
• Blackberries
🥑 6. Healthy Fats for Hormone Balance
Remember: lymph carries hormones, so the cleaner they are, the better.
• Avocado
• Extra virgin olive oil
• Salmon
• Walnuts
• Chia seeds
🫘 7. High-Fiber Foods (crucial!)
Fiber removes toxins through the gut so they don’t get dumped back into the lymph.
• Oats
• Lentils
• Beans
• Quinoa
• Apples
• Flaxseed
🛑 Foods That Clog, Slow, or Overload Your Lymphatic System
These foods thicken lymph, increase inflammation, and create extra waste your body struggles to clear.
🍞 1. Highly Processed Carbohydrates
They spike insulin, increase inflammation, and cause fluid retention.
• White bread
• Pastries
• Chips
• Crackers
• Processed cereals
🧂 2. High-Sodium Foods
Salt pulls fluid into the tissue → swelling → lymph overload.
• Fast foods
• Processed meats
• Packet soups
• Takeaways
🧀 3. Dairy (major lymph thickener)
Dairy increases mucus formation and is inflammatory for many people.
🍗 4. Processed Meats
Increase inflammatory cytokines that directly thicken lymph.
• Bacon
• Sausages
• Ham
• Salami
🍰 5. Sugar (the lymphatic enemy)
It causes:
✔ Inflammation
✔ Immune suppression
✔ Lymph stagnation
✔ Hormonal imbalance
🥫 6. Seed/Vegetable Oils
These create a high omega-6 environment that worsens swelling.
• Sunflower oil
• Canola oil
• Corn oil
• Soybean oil
🍤 7. Deep-Fried Foods
Heat-damaged oils + poor circulation = lymph traffic jam.
💚 Fun Lymphatic Plate Formula (Lymphatica Style!)
Build every meal like this:
🥬 40% Veggies (raw + cooked for enzymes and fiber)
🍗 30% Lean Protein (fish, eggs, chicken, beans)
🥑 20% Healthy Fats
🍓 10% Fruit or Low-GI Carbs
And drink 1.5–2L of water daily + herbal teas like ginger, dandelion, or green tea.
If your lymph could talk it would say:
“Feed me clean foods I can move through easily… and don’t dump garbage into my river.”
Nourish your lymph → reduce swelling → boost immunity → better hormones → better YOU. 💚
