• WHAT IS DRY NEEDLING? •

Dry needling involves the use of solid, single-use, filiform needles that are inserted into taut bands of muscle fibres (trigger points)
The needles are gently inserted into the muscle belly and/or trigger point for a short period of time before being removed

What does Dry Needling do?

Research suggests that dry needling can help with reducing pain sensitivity by braking the pain cycle often associated with chronic pain
Research also suggests dry needling can help by reducing inflammation and improve blood flow locally to the affected area

Reference:

How can Dry Needling help me?

Reducing pain and sensitivity can help create a safe space for the muscles to move easier
This allows for more long term goals like improving over all strength, mobility and function

What does Dry Needling feel like?

- A slight sting or pinch
- Some heaviness or deep ache as the needle is inserted into the muscle/trigger point
- There may be a sudden contraction of the muscle called a local twitch response. This is considered normal and a good sign!

Find out from your therapist how dry needling can be used during your treatment!

RUNNERS KNEE

aka Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

What is it?
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome is pain that is felt at
the front of the knee typically around
the knee cap (patella)

Your patella sits inside the tendon of your quadriceps muscles in and glides along a small groove in the front of your thigh bone (femur)

Tight, overused muscles around the knee can cause the patella to move outside this groove causing pain

Symptoms include:

Pain when kneeling or squatting
Pain walking up or down stairs
Pain when sitting with bent knee for extended periods
Pain is worse when trying to increase activities like running

Causes:
Tightness or weakness in the muscles around the knee (particularly your quadriceps)
Sudden increase in activity level without proper training
Poor running or jumping form

Your therapist can assess your movements and the muscles around the area to determine the potential cause of your knee pain

Followed by using soft tissue release techniques on the muscles around the knee and a comprehensive home exercise plan

ACHILLES TENDINOPATHY

Three ways Remedial Massage & Myotherapy can help

1. Soft Tissue Release
- Dry Needling
- Trigger Point Therapy
- Deep Tissue Massage

Soft tissue release techniques can help reduce muscle tension in the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles that insert into the Achilles tendon

2. Photobiomodulation / Red LED Light Therapy
- Rapidly reduce inflammation and pain
- Promote soft tissue repair
- Stimulate healing and collagen synthesis

3. Exercise Prescription
Exercise is a necessity when it comes to managing tendon pain
Progressive, eccentric and isometric exercises can help train the muscles and tendon to function normally again

Like most things, early intervention is key!
Your therapist will be able to assess you and determine the best course of action to help reduce your pain and get you back to doing what you love!
