Individual results vary. Sudden or unexplained hair loss should be assessed by a healthcare professional.

You see the brown patches. But beneath them, blood vessels may also be part of your melasma.

Research has found increased blood vessels in melasma-affected skin, alongside changes in the signals that influence pigment-producing cells.

This is what we mean by the “vascular component” of melasma.

It can overlap with epidermal pigment, dermal pigment or both. It isn’t a separate pigment depth—and it doesn’t always show up as obvious redness.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

Because fading the visible pigment may only address part of what’s happening in the skin.

It also helps explain why treating melasma takes more consideration than simply exfoliating a dark patch.

WHERE DOES SKINCARE FIT?

Here’s what’s happening beneath the surface:

TRIGGER
UV and visible light can stimulate pigment production. Hormonal influences and your underlying susceptibility also play a role.

SIGNAL
Your pigment-producing cells—melanocytes—respond to signals from the surrounding skin. In melasma, changes involving other skin cells and blood vessels can help sustain that activity.

PIGMENT
Melanocytes make melanin and pass it into neighbouring skin cells. As pigment accumulates again, the patches become more visible.

This is why improving melasma and maintaining that improvement are two parts of the same process.

A peel may help remove some surface pigment, but it doesn’t switch off every signal involved in making more. And pushing harder with exfoliation can cause irritation and additional pigmentation.
