A new 2026 study by researchers at the University of Freiburg found that honeybees don't simply fly in the general direction of flowers. Individual bees develop their own preferred routes and follow them again and again with astonishing precision, using landmarks such as trees and hedges to navigate.

The next time you see bees returning to the hive from the same direction, remember: they're not wandering. They're following a route they know by heart.

Today is World Bee Day 🐝

This year’s theme, “Bee together for people and the planet,” reminds us how deeply connected we are to pollinators and the natural world around us.

For thousands of years, bees have quietly sustained life : pollinating food crops, supporting ecosystems, inspiring traditions and helping communities thrive.

There are more than 20,000 species of bees worldwide, and around 2,000 species of native bees right here in Australia. Many of these tiny native pollinators have evolved alongside our unique Australian flora over thousands of years.

Some plants can only be pollinated by one specific species of bee. If that bee disappears, the plant may disappear too. Nature is woven together more delicately than many of us realise.

One of the most beautiful things we can do for native bees is simply make our gardens a little wilder and more welcoming 🌿
Plant flowering native species, leave some hollow stems and dry plant material in the garden, and allow patches of bare earth without mulch, as many native bees nest in the ground.

Every flowering garden becomes a small sanctuary. Every bee matters. 🐝💛

"Bee space" is a term that is given to a gap that bees create in a natural nest to enable them to pass freely around their nest. This gap is rarely filled with propolis or comb. This can be seen on this photo, where bees have built honeycomb in the lid of a a hive.

1814 Swiz scientist published his work on bee space, determined as 6 and 8 mm space. The discovery was adapted by Rev. Lorenzo Langstrot who designed a series of wooden frames within a rectangular hive box, carefully maintaining the correct space between successive movable frames. It is one of the widely used type of hives by beekeepers all over the world. We adopted Rose Hive developed by Tim Rowe.

The honey bees legs have a variety of uses :

🐝 Each leg has claws for gripping and sticky pads to assist the bee in landing on slick surfaces .
🐝 Honey bees have taste receptors on the tips of their legs . They use legs to detect sugary tastes in the flower before extending the tongue.
🐝 Honey bees hind legs have a set of tools used to collect and carry pollen called pollen press, brush and auricle.
🐝 Honey bees sleep between 6-8 hours each night and even hold each other's legs as they sleep.
