Microneedling uses a device to create tiny, controlled micro-channels in the skin. That controlled injury triggers the skin's own repair response, which can help to produce firmer looking skin. It's your skin doing the work. The device just prompts it.

The device we use is the SkinPen. I chose it specifically: it's the first FDA-cleared microneedling device in the world. That's not a marketing line. It means it's gone through the kind of clinical validation that a lot of devices in this space haven't.

It's adjustable in needle depth, which matters because skin isn't uniform and treatment shouldn't be either. And it's built for precision, which is what I want when I'm working on someone's face.

Whether you were in a packed pub in Freo, on the couch in your purple scarf, or pretending you weren't watching (I see you), yesterday was a big one. We were so close to something this city has waited more than thirty years for.

A few gentle reminders from me while we all recover:
• Drink some water. Yes, today.
• If you were out in the sun for the build up and skipped the sunscreen, your skin will let you know. Keep it moisturised and give it a break.
• Get a proper night's sleep. Monday's coming whether we like it or not.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝘀 𝗣𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻

I often get asked "Aren't peels more of a winter thing?" They can be & spring is a great time to start before the wild summer sun kicks in.

Winter's hard on skin. Heaters, hot showers… it all adds up, and dead skin cells hang around longer than they should.

A chemical peel uses acids to loosen the bonds holding those cells, so they shed more evenly. Why do I like doing this in spring?

𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲. Some peels are done as a course, so starting now gives us room to space them out.
𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲. Freshly peeled skin is more sensitive to UV. I'd much rather you're recovering now than at Cottesloe in January.
𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽. The stronger ones are only for skin that's already been through a series of gentler peels. You can't skip to the end. (I've tried negotiating this with myself. It doesn't work.)

A few of the peels we offer in clinic:

𝗟𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗲𝗲𝗹: A gentle, hydrating peel with Canadian Willowherb extract, finished with a peptide sheet mask and SPF. It's often where I start with someone new to peels.
𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗲𝗲𝗹: Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it can work into oily, congested pores. I use this one for breakout-prone skin, along with calming antioxidants.
𝗣𝗶𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗲𝗲𝗹: Salicylic acid paired with Tyrostat-11, an ingredient chosen for uneven skin tone and pigmentation.
𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗲𝗹: A multi-acid formula with kojic, mandelic, glycolic and sal acids plus retinol, with a take-home step you use at night. This is the one that needs prep.

This week I spoke at Aesthetic Business Masters here in Perth. Twice, actually. Which makes me sound very organised!! 😉

• TR Pro+ and post-procedure skin recovery: how the skin's barrier behaves after a treatment, and why aftercare deserves just as much thought as the treatment itself.
• Regulations for the Cosmetic Nurses Association: not the most glamorous topic on the agenda, I'll admit. But it's the one I care about a lot. The rules that shape this field exist to protect patients, and I want every nurse in this state to know them inside out.

After more than 30 years in this work, I still love a room full of practitioners who ask hard questions.
