Offset costs
The Safe Patient Care is the way to go. The offset to any increase in cost would be the better outcomes for patients, leading to less High Care costs.
Here's why we need nurse-resident ratios in aged care homes Nursing home providers looking to cut costs are bypassing registered nurses and employing less-skilled personal care attendants (PCAs) who aren't trained for the job.

Is it just the numbers?
The Senator has some good points about staffing ratios. Unfortunately, like it or not, we are not a socialist country and my understanding is that the Road Map is to see Aged Care come as close to self-funding as possible. That puts constraints on the finances which in turn affects your numbers and pay rates. Perhaps we can compete by improving our technology by using things like MyHealthCare. We need to find sustainable ways to improve all our aged care systems, so we can give the care and attention at the highest levels.
What Australia Could Learn from China's New Aged Care Staff Ratios | HelloCare In surprising international news, a province in China have enforced their own aged care staffing ratio - something that is yet to be done in Australia.

What’s a “Pass” mark?
15/44 is 66%, which might be OK if you are not the one with the 3 nuggets and 5 chips. Blue Care argue that more staff won’t change things and they may be right. But their culture of inattention to basics is something of a worry for the Blue Care Board. Either the processes are not there, or the staff can’t be bothered. I’d start with the processes. If you get that right, then you know it comes back to attitude.
'Three nuggets and five chips' for dinner: Memo reveals conditions in aged care facility Staff at a Queensland nursing home left residents without showers and unfed because of time constraints, a confidential memo obtained by 7.30 reveals.
Map X 5
Boards and Business Owners have mostly concentrated on looking at the business as it runs today. Questions to be answered include:
• Are we complying?
• Is there enough surplus?
• Can we borrow any more to expand and build/renovate?
There are enough problems in the Present to take our full attention and it makes good sense to maintain a steady course.
There is, however, an assumption that there will be a growth of 300+% for the Industry as the Baby Boomers come in!
It is hard to be certain about demand, but there is general agreement about the need for reform. Some of the issues include:
• There is to be more ‘Home delivery’ of Services;
• More people will want access to Higher Care;
• It is unlikely that Providers will be able to just stay with Residential or with Home Care – they will need both;
• The Mental side of Aging has its own problems;
• How does all this link in the Aged Disability?
All this may not be urgent yet, but if we wait a few minutes, it will be!
Meanwhile, there are serious misgivings about the consistency of Care. We have complete breakdowns, stressful situations and the well-run places and, quite frankly, it is not that obvious to an observer which is which.
The overlap between medical, mental and social care has created an interesting array of Assessments as well as a few ‘stalling’ points, which decision makers are within their rights to feel confused.
What is needed is an independent review of your business that not only tells you where you are and what needs fixing, but also points out both the constraints and the opportunities. Your Road Map needs to be based on objective facts and predictions so you can see as far down the road ahead as the Headlights will allow.
