You don't need to speak fluent hairdresser to have a great consultation.
Especially if you're seeing a new stylist or thinking about changing your hair, it can feel like you need to know exactly what to ask for.
You don't.
Use the words that make sense to YOU.
“I want to feel blonder.”
“My regrowth feels too obvious.”
“I don't want to be here every six weeks.”
“I saw this on TikTok but I have no idea what it's called.”
All of that gives your hairdresser information we can work with.
And please, bring the screenshots!
Inspiration pictures are such a useful communication tool and if you've found a result you love on your hairdresser's own socials, even better.
Show us what you love, what you don't love and what you're hoping to change.
A good consultation isn't a test of how much hair terminology you know.
It's a conversation.
Our job is to ask the questions that help turn “I sort of want something like this…” into a plan we both understand.

Why I don't hand-weave my foils anymore…
I'm a 90s-trained hairdresser.
We were good at a lot of things… but let's just say fine, delicate weaving wasn't always the assignment.
Hello chunky streaks.
These days I use a Vellen comb to create my weaves, and there are a few reasons why.
It gives me a more accurate and consistent weave, especially when I'm working through a whole head of foils.
It also takes some of the repetitive fine movement out of manually weaving every section, something my hands and wrists are VERY grateful for after 30+ years behind the chair.
And honestly? If there's a tool that helps me get a consistent result and makes the job a little easier on my body, I'm going to use it.
Hairdressing has changed enormously since I started.
So have my techniques.
And I think one of the best things experience teaches you is that you don't get extra points for doing something the hard way. 💜

This was my first proper go using the Cloud Nine Airshot Pro with the curling attachments and I actually timed myself because I wanted to see how long it took.

And even better? My curls lasted all day. 💜
Was my technique perfect? Nope. 😂
Will I get quicker as I get used to the attachments? Absolutely.
