Pain is influenced by more than just tissues.
After a big weekend, factors like sleep, recovery, hydration, stress, and nervous system sensitivity can all change at the same time.
So if your pain feels louder than usual, it doesn't automatically mean you've caused more damage.
Sometimes your body is simply asking for a little more recovery than it got over the weekend.
One of my most demanding clients.
Never books an appointment.
Demands the table at a very specific height.
Refuses to lie still.
Hasn't paid a single invoice in 5 years.
But somehow, my 5 year old son keeps showing up and demanding a massage. š
In all seriousness, remedial massage isn't just for adults. Active young people can benefit too, especially when they're dealing with growing pains, sports related aches and pains, muscle tightness, shin splints, Osgood-Schlatter, Sever's, postural discomfort, or simply the demands of training and sport.
Treatment for kids looks a little different. It's usually gentler, shorter, and often involves plenty of chatting, wriggling, and laughing.
And if you're wondering, I asked my son how he'd like to settle his account. His first and final offer seems to be a half eaten muesli bar š¤£

John has dealt with neck pain for years and had tried a lot of different things without finding lasting relief.
Over time, John, myself, and Dr Adam from have worked together with consistent treatment, release work, and regular adjustments to help keep him moving and functioning at his best.
And itās paying off š
For the first time in years, his neck pain has significantly reduced and this past weekend he went on to WIN the Forest Rally in Nannup, the second round of the Australian Rally Championship š
An incredible achievement and very well deserved.
Well done John, and thank you for trusting us to be part of your journey.

How do I warm up for squats as a sports remedial massage therapist who also experiences back pain?
Use your warm up as a chance to check in with your body, get some grease in the wheels, and make sure the parts that need to be working are ready!
āNo pain no gainā has convinced people that every ache is weakness and every flare up should be pushed through or avoided completely.
Your body is allowed to communicate with you.
The goal is to understand what your body is saying, not ignore it or panic over it.

Fascia is fascia-nating (haha see? I got jokes).
But āfascia stores emotionā is one of those claims that gets repeated far more strongly than it is supported scientifically.
Stress and emotions absolutely affect the body. That part is definitely real. We know how and why and there is a tonne of research to back this up. But thatās very different from emotions being physically trapped inside connective tissue.

š¢ Pain isnāt just influenced by tissues!
Hormones can affect:
Pain sensitivity
Inflammation
Recovery
Stress responses
Nervous system sensitivity
Which is why symptoms can sometimes fluctuate even without a new injury.
Remember... your body is a whole system, not just a collection of muscles and bones!

Pain flare ups can be super frustrating because they often feel like youāve gone backwards overnight.
BUT
bodies are more complicated than that.
Pain isnāt just about tissues. Itās also influenced by stress, sleep, recovery, nervous system sensitivity, workload, and yes, hormones too.
And that's okay! It just means your body is human.
The goal during a flare up is to not panic, and look at it as feedback to better understand what your system might need more (or less) of right now.
Treating shoulder pain with Rob!
One of the funniest people I've had the pleasure of meeting (genuinely missed his calling as a stand up comedian... there's still time, Rob!) came to me with shoulder pain. Over the next several weeks, we treated not just the symptomatic areas, but worked on increasing his range of motion to facilitate more pain free function through his shoulder.
What helped Rob was not just his commitment to release work, but his diligence to staying active in the pool and in the gym.
