It was our very first Dental Health Week on the incursion scene, and wow, what an unforgettable experience! From being greeted like tiny celebrities, to the hilarious questions (and answers!), and seeing so many children excited to learn...our hearts are so full 🥹

To every educator, room leader, director, administrator and all the wonderful people working behind the scenes, thank you for making each visit so welcoming, organised and fun. You are helping build healthy habits that will last a lifetime, and we're so grateful to have been part of it 👊🏽

👑 STAINLESS STEEL CROWNS 👑

One of the most common questions we get is:

"Why does my child need a stainless steel crown instead of a filling?"

When a baby molar has a larger cavity, especially between the teeth, a filling isn't always the strongest long-term option. That's where a stainless steel crown comes in.

At Molar Bears, we often favour the Hall Technique, a minimally invasive approach that allows us to place a stainless steel crown over the tooth without drilling, injections, or removing decay in suitable cases.

How does it work?

🐻 We carefully select a crown that fits over the tooth
🐻 The crown is cemented into place
🐻 The decay is sealed away from its food source (bacteria and sugars)
🐻 The tooth is protected until it naturally falls out

Why do we love it?

💙 No needles (in most cases)
💙 No drilling (in most cases)
💙 Often quicker and less stressful for children
💙 Protects the entire tooth, not just the cavity
💙 Excellent longevity compared to many traditional fillings in baby teeth

One concern parents often have is that the bite looks "high" afterwards. This is completely normal and usually settles naturally within a few weeks as children continue eating, chewing, and growing.

At Molar Bears, our goal is always to preserve baby teeth whenever possible. Healthy baby teeth help guide adult teeth into position, support speech development, chewing, confidence, and hold valuable space for the permanent teeth growing underneath.

📚 A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis found the Hall Technique was significantly more successful than conventional fillings for managing decay in primary teeth and was more than six times less likely to fail. It was also found to be well tolerated by children and accepted by parents.

Silver crowns might not win any fashion awards, but when it comes to protecting little teeth, they're often worth their weight in gold 🐻

PLAQUE to reality 😏

Ever wondered where all that sneaky plaque is hiding?

Plaque disclosing tablets are one of our favourite oral health detective tools. After chewing a tablet, the plaque on the teeth is stained bright colours, making it easy to see the spots that have been missed during brushing 👌🏽

What we often see:

🔍 Plaque hanging out along the gumline
🔍 Plaque hiding behind the front teeth
🔍 "Clean-looking" teeth that still have plenty of plaque lurking about
🔍 Areas children (and adults!) think they're brushing well but actually aren't

Why do we love them?

💙 They turn brushing from a guessing game into a visual learning experience
💙 Children can instantly see where they need to focus
💙 Parents can better support brushing at home
💙 They help build brushing skills and confidence

The best part? There's no judgement here. Plaque is completely normal, it starts forming again within hours of brushing. The goal isn't perfection, it's helping little mouths learn how to remove it more effectively.

📚 Evidence supports what we see! A 2021 systematic review found that oral hygiene instruction combined with plaque-disclosing methods can improve self-performed plaque control compared with instruction alone.

From singalongs during brushing, to cheeky grins, surprise dance parties, dinosaur debates, and the “show me your teeth!” moments, every visit has filled our cups more than you know 😍

Watching children grow in confidence around dental care, helping families feel supported, and making oral health fun, calm and accessible has been the biggest privilege 🙌🏼
