In the nail salon industry, the gold standard for medical-grade sterilisation of instruments is the use of an ultrasonic cleaner and an autoclave. Ultrasonic cleaners use sound waves to dislodge tiny particles from used instruments. The implements are then placed in sealed pouches and placed in an autoclave which forces high pressure steam at 134ยฐ over every surface of the implement, killing 100% of microbes, bacteria and fungi.

Itโ€™s a sad truth that a lot of nail salons donโ€™t use autoclaves, or they simply present implements for use in sterilisation pouches, to look as if theyโ€™ve been through a steam sterilisation process. How do you know if the instruments that are about to be used on you are really sterilised? Take a closer look at the pouch. There is a colour indicator on one corner of the pouch. This indicator will change from light blue (or pink) to black (or dark brown) following treatment. The pouch will also have a crinkled appearance, as a result of being exposed to the high temperature steam. Don't risk your health - look at that pouch!
