I don’t usually open up like this, but today my heart is heavy — and full at the same time. I’m sharing this as a single parent and as the owner of Hair Crew Hive, a business I built with my own hands, my own sacrifices, and my dreams for a better future for my child.

I recently lost an opportunity that could have changed everything for us. A chance to bring a new hair service/treatment to Australia — something I worked hard for, planned for, and believed in. I wasn’t unprepared. I wasn’t lacking effort. I was blocked by a system that makes it almost impossible for small businesses to grow.

All I needed was a simple visa for support at home and one to hire an employee. Instead, I was met with closed doors, strict rules, and departments passing responsibility back and forth like my business — and my child’s future — didn’t matter.

As a single parent, every step I take is for my child. Every late night, every early morning, every risk, every dream — it’s all for the kid. I don’t have a partner to lean on. I don’t have a second income. I don’t have a safety net. I built Hair Crew Hive while juggling parenthood, exhaustion, and the pressure of keeping everything together.

And still, I kept going.
Because that’s what single parents do.
We keep going even when it hurts.

But the truth is, the system makes it incredibly hard:
• No qualified workers available locally
• Apprentices cost almost the same as qualified staff but can’t generate income
• Hiring overseas is blocked by outdated rules
• Asking for help leads nowhere
• Costs keep rising while support keeps shrinking

And through all of this, small businesses are expected to survive on determination alone.
