Why I Use Ultra Finely Milled Oats

For my Low Allergen Goat Milk & Oats Bar, ordinary ground oats just won't do.

I start with whole rolled oats and grind and sift them around seven times, until they turn into an incredibly fine, silky powder, similar in texture to colloidal oats, but made by hand in my own small batches.

Why go to all that trouble? Because I want this bar to feel smooth and creamy against the skin, not coarse or scratchy. It's an extra step, but the difference is easy to see (and feel). Just look at the photo: whole oats on one side, silky fine oat powder on the other.

I was asked a question this morning:

“What makes you different from other soapmakers?”

And honestly, I didn’t really have an answer.

I just thought… I make soap. This is what I do.

But it got me thinking about it a little more.

There are lots of makers who make their products from scratch, and everyone has their own way of doing things.

For me, I’ve chosen to keep things really simple.

I make my products from scratch, in small batches, and carefully choose the ingredients I use. I don’t use micas, synthetic fragrances or unnecessary fillers in my soaps.

Those choices are simply part of how I want to make my products and run my business. Other makers have their own choices, and that’s completely okay.

I suppose I’ve never really thought of my approach as being different. It’s just what feels right for Nourishing SoapBee.

But I think I’ve finally answered the question.

It’s simply my way of making soap.

Let’s be honest about Nourishing SoapBee. I’m Michelle, the that’s makes all of these beautiful products.

I don’t make products because I think everyone needs another thing to buy. I make them because I genuinely care about what goes onto our skin.

Nourishing SoapBee started because of my daughter’s eczema returning as a teenager. That sent me down the rabbit hole of learning about ingredients, making things differently and eventually creating products I was happy to use on my own family.

Everything is made in small batches by me. I choose my ingredients carefully, I don’t use added fragrance or essential oils in my soaps, and I’m not interested in making miracle claims just to sell something.

Are my products factory perfect? Nope. They’re handmade. Sometimes you can see that, and I think that’s part of the charm.

When I’m not covered in soap batter, I’m a proud wife, mum, gran, and dog owner, living a busy and beautiful family life right here in Rothwell.

I started this journey over a decade ago out of a deeply personal need: finding truly gentle, honest skincare for my daughter’s highly sensitive skin.

What began as a mother’s mission evolved into a passion for traditional soap craftsmanship, and today, I am the sole hands behind every single recipe, batch, and cut.

At Nourishing SoapBee, our ethos is built on two unshakeable pillars: absolute transparency and pure, functional ingredients. We don't use fillers, we don't use synthetic hardeners, and we firmly refuse to use palm oil or soy wax. We keep our product formulations incredibly intentional.

Our Hot Process Bars: Crafted into rustic loaves, we blend our fresh milks directly into our warm fats before the cook to preserve the natural creaminess of the milk for an ultra-gentle, non-stripping wash.

Our Cold Process Bars: Crafted using detailed individual cavity molds to create our signature bee and honeycomb designs, keeping the natural colors of our botanical ingredients vibrant and uniform.

Our Liquid Body Washes: Carefully formulated and infused with pure essential oils to deliver a beautifully natural, uplifting shower experience.

Our Premium Bases: Depending on the bar you choose, we formulate with either locally upcycled, zero-waste tallow (a natural byproduct that would otherwise go to waste) or a completely tallow-free framework of plant oils like nourishing olive oil and rice bran oil.

🥥 The 25% Coconut Oil Cap: Many commercial soaps flood their bars with cheap coconut oil, which can strip away your skin's natural oils. We strictly cap our coconut oil at a maximum of 25% to ensure a fluffy flash-foam that cleanses effectively without ever leaving your skin feeling tight or dry.

💧 Castor Oil & Local Beeswax: Castor oil acts as our natural lather magnifier, locking in those gorgeous bubbles so they don’t collapse in the water. A touch of local beeswax gives our bars a beautiful satin sheen and ensures they stay long-lasting in a steamy shower.

A little soap experiment happening at Nourishing SoapBee

I’ve reduced the amount of Australian Red Reef Clay in this batch after finding that using the full amount meant some batches just didn’t behave properly.

Rather than giving up on the clay, I’ve cut the amount in half to see if I can get a better behaving soap while still keeping the botanical benefits of the clay.

And so far, I’m pretty happy with how they’re looking.

No manky ones this time.

Now we wait for them to cure and see how they go.

“Mum, we have to track this. I want other people to know what this stuff does!"

She’s grown up using S.O.S Skin Balm for everything, so after a minor burn, my 14yo made me take photos over 3 days to track it. Swipe through to see how it kept her skin nourished and moisturised!
