New lipoedema research alert... moving in the right direction!

New research alert! 📢

Lymphoedema & Lipoedema Physiotherapist & Lipoedema Australia Board Member Lucy Melican and Clinical Nutritionist & Lipoedema Australia Advisory Board Member Megan Pfeffer have had their study on lipoedema Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) published in the Journal of Lymphoedema.

It shows BMI misclassifies 63.6% of women with lipoedema as obese, while Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) identifies only 31.7%, half as many.

Why? BMI unfairly penalises lipoedema’s typical fat distribution. This misdiagnosis affects care, mental health, and funding.

Switching to WHtR could redirect ~A$188.8M to targeted lipoedema services, improving outcomes and value.

To health professionals: Use WHtR for accurate diagnosis and appropriate patient care.
