Why do your shoulders keep tightening up?
This is something I see regularly with clients who feel like their shoulders are always carrying tension.
You may stretch, massage the area, roll your shoulders but the tightness keeps returning.
Why?
Because sometimes the issue isn’t just the muscle itself.
The upper trapezius muscles work hard every day. They help support your posture, assist with movement, and often take over when other muscles aren’t doing their share.
Things like:
• long hours sitting
• looking down at phones
• driving
• repetitive movements
• stress and tension
can all contribute to your shoulders feeling like they are constantly “switched on”.
A simple reset you can try at home:
1. Shrug & release
Slowly lift your shoulders towards your ears.
Hold for a couple of seconds...
Then slowly let them drop and feel the difference between tension and relaxation.
Repeat 5–10 times.
2. Activate your postural muscles
Using a resistance band anchored to a door:
Gently draw your shoulder blades back and down, as if they are sliding into your back pockets.
Focus on control not force.
The goal isn’t to squeeze as hard as possible. It’s to teach your body a better movement pattern.
Sometimes tight muscles are not asking for more stretching they are asking for better support.
At Back in Action, we look beyond where you feel the pain and assess how your body is moving as a whole.
Helping you move better, feel better and get back into action.

As the weather cools down, many people notice their body starts to feel different.
Muscles become tighter, old injuries can become more noticeable, and stiffness can creep into everyday movement.
Hot stone therapy is not just about relaxation. When combined with therapeutic massage, the warmth helps prepare the tissues, allowing deeper work and helping your body let go of built-up tension.
Winter is the perfect time to give your body the attention it deserves.

Work takes its toll... no matter what kind of work you do.
You might be on your feet all day. You might spend your day lifting, carrying, bending, caring for others, running a business, or raising a family
Different jobs. Different lives.
But over time, your body keeps the score.
The tension builds. The aches creep in. Your energy fades. What starts as "just a little tightness" slowly becomes something you've learned to live with.
You don't have to wait until you're in pain.
Sometimes a massage isn't a luxury.
It's maintenance.
At Back in Action Healthy Body & Spirit Massage, I help people move better, feel better, and stay ahead of pain through remedial massage tailored to their body and lifestyle.

WAKE UP YOUR HIP FLEXORS, FREE YOUR LOWER BACK
Your hip flexors do more than just lift your legs.
They help stabilise your pelvis, support movement, and work closely with your core and glutes.
But after long periods sitting, driving, or poor movement habits, they often become tight, shortened, and overworked.
And when that happens…
your lower back usually starts picking up the extra load.
One simple movement to help reset this pattern is:
Half Kneeling Hip Flexor Stretch
– Kneel on one knee with the opposite foot in front
– Gently tuck your pelvis under
– Shift your weight slightly forward
– You should feel a stretch through the front of the hip
– Hold 20–30 seconds each side
– Repeat 2–3 rounds
The key isn’t forcing the stretch… it’s learning how to move well again.
This isn’t just flexibility work… it’s helping your body move the way it was designed to.
Improving hip mobility can help:
• reduce lower back tightness
• improve posture
• decrease hip tension
• improve walking mechanics
• reduce stiffness after sitting
Many people stretch their back repeatedly when the real problem is happening through the hips.
The body is smart… it compensates until it can’t anymore.
Want help finding where your body is compensating and what it actually needs?

The psoas muscle, a long, deep muscle spanning the hip and lower back, plays an essential role in movement and stability and may be a source of lower back pain for some individuals. The iliopsoas muscle is responsible for several vital functions.
It contributes to hip joint stability. It facilitates hip flexion, such as raising the knee toward the chest. It aids in the internal rotation of the thigh. It assists in lateral flexion, also known as sidebending.
The psoas major portion assists the re**us abdominus (abs) in flexing the lumbar spine. The iliopsoas are essential for walking, running, and crawling.
What Causes A Tight Psoas Muscle?
Several factors can contribute to tight psoas muscles, such as:
• Sitting for long periods
• Poor posture
• Wearing high heels
• Pregnancy
• Being overweight or obese
By releasing the tightness within the fibres (knots), the muscle will then be able to stretch easier and become longer. The greater length of the muscle will eventually decrease the pull on its origin and insertion points, helping to return to normal function.
Did you know you can help by releasing, stretching, and strengthening the Psoas Muscle.
• KETTLEBELL SWING
When done correctly, this exercise can build incredible core and leg strength, thus improving the psoas muscles.
• LEG LIFTS
Lie on your back with your face upward. Engage your core muscles and lift your legs straight up. Point your toes toward the ceiling. Slowly and carefully lower one leg.
• SIT-UPS
• BRIDGES
• LUNGES
Your massage therapist can release this muscle during your session but also show you how to stretch and strengthen at home.⠀
