Feeding difficulties can feel really overwhelming for families, especially when it’s hard to know where to start.

At Cove Feeding Hub, our team works together to help understand what may be impacting a child’s feeding and support families in a way that feels practical, supportive, and achievable.

Feeding progress often starts with feeling heard and understood.🫶

What helps most is creating safe, supportive, and responsive mealtime experiences.

Responsive feeding focuses on safety, trust, connection, and following the child’s cues rather than pressure or expectations around eating.

Sometimes progress in feeding looks different to what people expect. Progress may look like exploring a new texture, touching or smelling food, self-feeding, tolerating food nearby, sitting at the table comfortably, or simply feeling safer around meals.

These small steps matter.

When children feel safe, supported, and understood, feeding skills can develop over time.

Pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) reflects the complexity of eating, where medical, nutritional, feeding skill, and psychosocial domains all interact and overlap to shape a child’s ability to safely and effectively eat. Each domain also influences the others, meaning change in one area can impact feeding function across the whole system.

Because of this interconnected nature, no single discipline can fully capture or address the whole picture. This is why multidisciplinary collaboration is essential.

Support often involves paediatricians, gastroenterologists, dietitians, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and other specialists, each bringing a unique lens to understanding and supporting mealtime participation.

By viewing feeding through all domains, we can better appreciate its complexity and tailor intervention to support safe, functional, and positive eating experiences.

EPISODE 4 - The Role of an OT in PFD🍽️

Occupational Therapists play a key role in supporting children with PFD by looking at the many factors that impact a child’s ability to participate in feeding and mealtimes.

This can include supporting sensory processing differences, posture and positioning, fine motor skills, self-feeding, routines, regulation, mealtime environments, and the emotional experience of feeding for both the child and family.

OTs work to create positive, safe and supportive mealtime experiences while helping families build confidence and participation in everyday feeding routines.

Because feeding is about more than just eating — it’s about connection, participation and quality of life.

This family’s story is a reminder that feeding difficulties are never just about food. They affect mealtimes, relationships, sibling dynamics, emotional wellbeing, and the everyday rhythm of family life.

What stood out most here is not just the challenges, but what matters to this family - trying to keep their child nourished, supporting siblings to understand what they’re seeing, and continuing to show up for mealtimes even when things feel uncertain.

And importantly, the support that has made a difference hasn’t been perfect answers, it’s been persistence in seeking help, and not having to navigate it alone.

This is why asking what matters most to families is essential.

Because goals, priorities, and “success” at mealtimes will look different for every child and every family and meaningful support starts there.

EPISODE 3 - The Role of a Speech Pathologist in PFD👶

Speech Pathologists play a key role in supporting children with PFD by assessing and supporting difficulties related to swallowing safety, oral motor skills, chewing efficiency, coordination for eating and drinking, texture progression, and overall mealtime function.

Therapy is individualised to each child’s developmental and medical needs, with a focus on building safe, positive and functional feeding experiences while supporting families throughout the feeding journey. 🍽️

EPISODE 2 - Why Feeding is so Complex🥄

Children use multiple body systems at once during feeding - sensory processing, oral motor coordination, posture, breathing, digestion, and emotional regulation.
When feeding feels difficult, there’s often more than one factor involved.

Understanding the “why” behind feeding challenges helps guide more appropriate support.
