The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and the European arm of the World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA Europe) have published a consensus report aimed at establishing specific recommendations for dental professionals and general practitioners. The goal is to improve prevention, detection, and treatment of cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, and respiratory diseases. The report emphasizes the systemic impact of periodontitis on these conditions and suggests that oral health professionals and general medical practitioners should collaborate in managing non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This includes implementing strategies for the early detection of periodontitis in primary care centers and of cardiovascular diseases or diabetes in dental settings.
Oral health professionals are encouraged to inform patients with periodontitis about their higher risk of cardiovascular diseases and to take action by assessing for cardiovascular disease risk factors. They should also try to identify patients with undiagnosed prediabetes and diabetes. For patients with respiratory diseases, recommendations on risk factor control should be implemented in both dental care settings and primary care centers.
The consensus report concludes that general practitioners and oral health professionals should work together in preventing, detecting, and treating major systemic diseases, exchanging information and mutually referring their patients, and promoting healthy lifestyles among them.
