While they are often used interchangeably, dry and dehydrated skin are not the same thing and understanding the difference can completely change the way you care for your skin.

Dry skin is a genetic skin type that lacks oil and essential lipids.
These lipids and oils form part of the skin barrier, so when they’re underproducing it is far easier for irritants and external aggressors to enter and cause a cascade of inflammatory issues.

Dehydration is a skin condition, a water loss issue that occurs when the skins barrier is not in balance and any skin type can suffer with barrier imbalances, including oily skin. So, much like a dry skin lacking in oils falls into barrier imbalanced territory so does an oily skin, because water loss is due to the imbalance of the barrier not just no oil at all.

The reason they’re so interchangeably used is because a dry skin that is not cared for correctly will naturally become dehydrated as water is going to escape easier given there is no protective lipid film on the surface of the skin to lock in the water. Whereas dehydration in oily skin often goes unnoticed to the untrained eye.
