The June solstice has marked the shift of day and night again. Like a swinging pendulum, the length of darkness and light swap over in how they cloak our planet. In the southern hemisphere, it is the return of light and rising of life, while in the northern hemisphere, this day marks the beginning of the latter half of the natural cycle - slowing down, shedding and resting.

It is fascinating to know these completely opposing phases occur at the same time on the same planet: They only exist because of each other. Like yin and yang. Like the tides of our oceans. Moving water to one place, retracts it simultaneously from another.

Just like the solstice signifies the change of light and dark for our nature, where are you able to shift your focus, your spotlight from one area to another? Introducing light and energy to one place while letting another rest and recover. Where do you desire to grow and where do you choose deliberate rest?

The seasons are changing.

In the southern hemisphere, we are heading into the darker seasons. Turning inward, farewelling summer and sun. Autumn, my favourite season of all, welcomes the slowing down and cosiness of this time. The light changes to a metallic shimmering.

Meanwhile, the northern hemisphere is awakening. Emerging out of winter, welcoming new life. Mother Nature blooms and all her vitality becomes visibile whereever one‘s eye may wander.

February Reflections

If there was one word to describe your month of February, what would that be?

This month’s check-in is about our connections, with others and ourselves.

Moving into the later summer months in Australia means spending time outdoors, socialising and connecting with others. In the northern hemisphere, the days become longer again and the return of more light prepares the onset of spring. During winter the focus of our connections is naturally more internal, physically indoors and emotionally introverted.

Countless studies have shown the importance of social connection for our state of being well. Jessica Trach, Keerthi Ramanujan, Clifford Saron and Nandini Chatterjee Singh summarise in their book:

Humans are born with an innate capacity for forming social connections. Early socialisation during infancy and childhood plays a significant and critical role in guiding one’s personal and emotional development. Humans also need social and emotional connections for learning and higher-order cognition. The path of learning is inevitably the path of evolution, growth and expansion. One of the most profound insights I discovered lately stems from Master Eckhart Tolle: To gain novel awareness of different viewpoints and to become the observer of previously subconscious automation, means to enter a new level of consciousness. The question arising from this is, what is there beyond what our worldly minds assume to be reality?

In a recent class on the art of perfume making, the word perfume was translated to: Per = Through and Fume = Smoke. “Through the smoke” of a scent one may enter another realm, a new level of consciousness. Herein, the power of scent gained new meaning in its potential impact and offering.
