In the same way that enzymes break down food to kickstart digestion, those found in skincare products help break down old, dead skin cells on the surface of the skin without leaving it red, flaky or inflamed. Enzymes in skincare work by removing the dead skin cells from the epidermis, the uppermost layer of the skin. These enzymes break down the protein bonds between dead skin cells and the epidermis.
