🔪✂️ PSA TO ALL BARBERS & HAIRSTYLISTS: Stop Storing Your Shears Like This! ✂️🔪
Hey friends — I see this setup in shops almost every day, and I need to say something: That tool caddy? It's slowly destroying your scissors.
I sharpen scissors for a living, and I can tell when someone's been tossing their scissors into a caddy or drawer with combs, clips, and brushes. Here's what's happening while you're not looking:
❌ Blade-on-blade contact — Every time you drop your scissors in, they're clanking against metal combs, clips, and your other scissors. Those micro-chips and nicks add up FAST.
❌ No protection — Your edges are exposed to everything in that caddy. That soft foam insert? It traps moisture, hair product residue, and bacteria right against your metal.
❌ Constant vibration & movement — Throughout the day, every bump of the station grinds your blades together. You're essentially dulling them on the job.
❌ The "quick grab" temptation — Reaching in blind? You're likely scraping your edges across hard plastic or metal just to pull them out.
The result? Scissors that should stay sharp for 3–6 months are coming back to me in 4–6 weeks. That's hundreds of dollars in unnecessary sharpening, shortened scissor life, and worse — tuggy, uneven cuts on your clients.
✅ What to do instead:
Use a scissor holster or pouch — Leather or nylon, individual slots, keep them separated.
A dedicated scissor case or roll — Protects edges and keeps moisture out.
Magnetic strip or individual hook — If you must display them, keep them apart and secure.
Wipe down & oil before storing — Every. Single. Day.
Your scissors are your most important tool. Treat them like the investment they are, not like a comb you can toss in a bucket.

Drop a 🔪 if you're guilty of this — no judgment, we've all been there. Let's level up together.

✂️ Why the cheapest scissor sharpening isn’t always the best choice ✂️
When it comes to your hairdressing scissors, quality sharpening matters more than price. I often get asked as the 1st question after introducing myself to a salon - 'How much do you charge?'
Cheap sharpening might seem like a good deal, but it often means shortcuts are taken—incorrect angles, poor finishing, or even damage to the blade. This can leave your scissors feeling rough, pushing or folding hair instead of cleanly cutting it, and ultimately shortening their lifespan.
A skilled, experienced sharpener understands the precision required for professional hairdressing scissors. They maintain the correct edge geometry, balance, and tension—so your scissors glide effortlessly through hair, feel smoother in your hand, and perform exactly the way they were designed to.
The difference?
✔ Cleaner, more precise cuts
✔ Less strain on your hands and wrists
✔ Scissors that stay sharper for longer
✔ Longer overall life of your investment
Your scissors are your tools of trade—investing in proper sharpening isn’t an expense, it’s protection for your craft.
I charge $5 more than the other guys because I have taken the time and spent a lot of money on getting the best possible training in the world and also on the best equipment to sharpen your precious scissors better than everyone else.
Don’t settle for the cheapest option… your work (and your clients) deserve better.

Last week I flew half way around the world to attend an intense 5 day scissor sharpening seminar with arguably the best scissor sharpening instructor outside of Japan - Mr Jean-Paul Babin. This was not a normal scissor sharpening lesson. We went in depth, getting down to the molecular structure of the metals and the way they move and react to certain situations.
I am constantly in search of improving my skills in scissor sharpening so I can be the very best sharpener for you and your precious tools/ scissors.
I'm based in Sydney but take in orders from all over the country. 0422 228 123.

Tips catching hair?
When the tips won’t close, it’s usually one of a few things. Here’s a quick, practical rundown:
Most common causes (and fixes)
Pivot screw too loose
If the blades wobble, they won’t meet at the tip.
👉 Tighten the screw slightly (tiny turns). Test as you go—too tight = stiff scissors.
Blades misaligned or bent
Often from dropping them or cutting something too thick.
👉 If you look down the blades and they’re not perfectly crossing, that’s the issue.
Unfortunately this usually needs a pro sharpen/realignment.
Wear near the pivot
Over time, metal wears down so the blades no longer travel far enough.
👉 Temporary fix: tighten the screw.
Long-term fix: professional sharpening or replacement.
Gunk in the pivot
Hair, tape glue, sap, lint—sneaky stuff.
👉 Clean with rubbing alcohol + cotton bud, then add one drop of oil.
Cheap or soft metal
Some scissors just… give up early.
👉 If they’ve never cut well at the tips, it might not be fixable.
Quick test
Try cutting thin tissue or paper using only the tips.
If it folds instead of cutting → alignment/tension problem.
If it cuts after tightening → you’re golden.

✂️ Why Hair Colour Chemicals Can Damage Your Scissors ✂️
Most stylists don’t realise how much damage colour chemicals can do to their scissors over time. When colouring hair, even tiny splashes or residue from tint, bleach, or peroxide can land on your blades. These chemicals are corrosive — they slowly eat away at the metal, dull the edge, and cause rust spots or stiffness in the screw system.
That’s why it’s so important to clean your scissors at the end of every workday. A quick wipe with a soft cloth and a drop of scissor oil helps remove chemical residue, moisture, and hair fragments that build up through the day.
✨ Clean scissors = smoother cutting, longer life, and better performance.
Your tools are your trade — look after them, and they’ll look after you. 💪

Why You Shouldn’t Choose the Cheapest Scissor Sharpener
When it comes to professional hairdressing scissors, sharpening isn’t just about “making them cut again.” It’s about preserving the precision, balance, and lifespan of your tools. Going for the cheapest sharpener might save you a few dollars today, but it can cost you far more in the long run. Here’s why:
1. Loss of Blade Life – Poor sharpening often removes too much steel. Every unnecessary grind shortens the life of your scissors.
2. Incorrect Angles – Professional scissors have carefully engineered edges. A cheap sharpener may not match these angles, leaving your shears tugging or folding hair instead of cutting cleanly.
3. Damaged Ride Line – The inner edge (ride line) is critical for smooth cutting. An untrained sharpener can destroy it, leading to crunching, catching, and permanent damage.
4. Hidden Costs – If your scissors dull quickly after a poor sharpening, you’ll end up needing more frequent service—or even replacing them prematurely.
5. Your Reputation – Dull or poorly serviced scissors affect every haircut. Clients notice when cuts aren’t clean, and that reflects on your skills—not just your tools.
Bottom line: Quality sharpening isn’t an expense—it’s an investment in your tools, your craft, and your clients’ experience.

✂️ Let’s talk about the RideLine and your scissors! ✂️
Every pair of professional hairdressing scissors has a special edge along the inside of the blade called the RideLine. This is the smooth, polished line that allows your scissors to glide effortlessly, giving you precision and comfort with every cut.
🔧 But here’s the catch:
If the RideLine becomes worn down, scratched, or improperly sharpened, your scissors won’t cut cleanly anymore. Instead of sliding smoothly, they’ll start pushing or folding hair, which not only affects your cutting but also puts extra strain on your hands and wrists.
✨ That’s why protecting and maintaining the RideLine is one of the most important parts of scissor care. A skilled sharpener will always preserve it — because once it’s gone, the performance of your scissors is never the same.
Take care of the RideLine, and your scissors will take care of you. 💇♀️💇♂️
