On June 7, 2026 Australia lost Professor Richard Scolyer AO. Melanoma pathologist. Australian of the Year 2024. A man who gave everything to the science of early detection, including, at the end, himself.

One Australian is diagnosed with melanoma every 30 minutes. Over 90 per cent of cases are successfully treated when caught early.

Hair and beauty professionals are grateful for everything Professor Scolyer gave to this country and to the science that will outlast him. He spent his career making sure that what gets noticed early gets treated successfully. They are often the first to notice something.

VALE Professor Richard Scolyer, AO.

Lawyers and consultants are calling sham contracting laws "new." They are not. The law changed in 2024. HABA members already knew.

Whether you run a home-based salon, rent a chair, or manage a small team — compliance obligations are the same, and the consequences of getting them wrong are real.

Don't be the operator who finds out two years too late.

HABA membership gives you:

☑️ Personalised advice on employment law and the Hair and Beauty Award
☑️ Unlimited phone support Monday to Friday
☑️ Templates, contracts and fact sheets you can actually use
☑️ 24/7 access to our member portal and knowledgebase
☑️ Mediation and Fair Work representation if things go wrong

For less than $10 a week, you know exactly where you stand.

The end of the financial year is one of the most important checkpoints for salon, barbershop and beauty business owners.
Before 30 June, make sure you have:

✔️ Confirmed your wage rates are aligned to the Hair and Beauty Award 2020
✔️ Processed any outstanding superannuation payments — the SG rate is 12%
✔️ Reviewed leave balances and entitlements for all staff
✔️ Prepared accurate payroll records for end-of-year reporting

And a reminder: the Fair Work Commission's 2025–26 Annual Wage Review result is expected shortly. A wage increase will likely apply from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026.

HABA will be providing members with updated Award wage tables as soon as they are released. Make sure your membership is current so you don't miss it.

𝙆𝙞𝙣𝙜'𝙨 𝘽𝙞𝙧𝙩𝙝𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙇𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙒𝙚𝙚𝙠𝙚𝙣𝙙 — 𝙋𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙞𝙘 𝙃𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙍𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝘼𝙥𝙥𝙡𝙮

If your salon, barbershop or beauty business is trading on Monday 8 June 2026, public holiday penalty rates apply to your team.

This long weekend covers Saturday 6 to Monday 8 June and applies in NSW, VIC, SA, TAS, ACT and NT.

A note for our WA and QLD members: the King has apparently decided your states need a bit more time to plan the party. WA observes the King's Birthday on the last Monday in September, and QLD marks it on the last Monday in October. Monday 8 June is a standard trading day in both states. Award rates apply as normal.

If you are unsure which rates apply to your location, or how to calculate penalty rates under the Hair and Beauty Award, do not guess.

Ask HABA. Our team will confirm the correct rates for your state.

Barbering is evolving, and so are the ways barbershops operate.

Chair hire, shared spaces, solo operators, and flexible work setups can be great for business — but they also come with legal and compliance responsibilities that many owners don’t see until there’s a dispute.

If you run a barbershop and you:

- employ barbers
- lease chairs/spaces
- or do a mix of both

HABA can help you get the structure right and reduce risk.

We can support you with:

• Chair/space hire agreements and practical guidance
• Clear advice on your obligations as a host business
• Award interpretation and compliance support
• Help navigating disputes early, before they escalate
• Recruitment and contracts if you’re growing your team

If you’re unsure whether your current setup is compliant, it’s worth checking now, not later.
