What does “no indications of heating” actually mean on a sapphire laboratory report?
Heat treatment is commonly used to improve the colour and clarity of natural sapphire. A heated sapphire is still a natural sapphire — but understanding whether a stone has been treated is an important part of understanding what you’re buying.
When a gemmological laboratory reports “no indications of heating”, it means its examination found no evidence that the sapphire has undergone heat treatment.
Why does that matter? Fine unheated sapphires can be rarer and may command a premium, particularly when exceptional colour, quality and provenance come together.
But heated doesn’t mean bad — and unheated doesn’t automatically mean better. What matters is knowing the stone, understanding any treatment and having it properly disclosed.

What does it actually mean when a sapphire has been heated?
Heat treatment has been used in the gemstone world for generations to improve the colour and clarity of natural sapphires. A heated sapphire is still a natural sapphire — the treatment simply enhances characteristics already present within the stone.
An unheated sapphire has not undergone this treatment, and fine examples can command a premium because of their rarity.
But can you tell a heated sapphire from an unheated sapphire just by looking at it? Often, it isn’t that simple. Gemmologists examine inclusions and other microscopic characteristics, and laboratory testing can be important when determining treatment.
So when choosing a sapphire, the question isn’t simply “heated or unheated?” Colour, origin, clarity, beauty, rarity and — most importantly — proper disclosure all form part of the story.
