This week's update... 💗

One of the biggest appointments I've had so far was with the genetics team.

We didn't just talk about my family history. We talked about everything that can influence breast cancer risk—when I got my first period, when I had my children, whether I breastfed, for how long, and so much more. It was fascinating to learn just how many factors are considered.

I've also made what I believe is the biggest decision of this journey.

I've decided to have a double mastectomy.

For me, this decision isn't about fear... it's about longevity and peace of mind.

Because of the size & location of the cancer I had the option of a lumpectomy with radiation or a mastectomy. Radiation is an incredible treatment that destroys any remaining cancer cells after surgery, but it can also cause the treated breast to shrink, become firmer and change shape over time. For me personally, after weighing everything up, I feel that a double mastectomy is the right decision.

Another thing I learned is how much medicine has advanced.

Only a few years ago, genetic testing for inherited breast cancer risk was much more limited. Today, many Australians are offered a panel that looks at 14 different genes, including the well-known BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, but also several others that can increase the risk of breast and other cancers. Every year we're learning more, and with AI now helping researchers analyse enormous amounts of genetic data, the future of personalised medicine is incredibly exciting.

Although only around 5–10% of breast cancers are caused by an inherited gene mutation, identifying those people can completely change their treatment, future screening and even help protect other family members.

If there's one thing I've taken away from this journey, it's this:

✨ Knowledge truly is power.

If something doesn't feel right, get it checked. If your specialist recommends extra testing, do it. And don't ever be afraid to ask questions until you understand your options.

I'm sharing my journey because if it encourages even one person to check their breasts, book that scan or advocate for themselves... then every vulnerable post is worth it. 💕

About 1 in 7–8 Australian women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime.

At 35 years old, I never imagined I'd be writing these words, but I've recently been diagnosed with breast cancer.

I have no family history.

And that's something I really want people to understand, because most women diagnosed with breast cancer don't have a family history either.

I've decided to share my journey with you—not for sympathy, but because if sharing my story helps even one person check their breasts, trust their instincts, or seek help sooner, then it will all be worth it.

✨ You are not too young.
✨ You do not need a family history.
✨ Breast cancer can happen to anyone.

Because of my age, the speed at which this lump appeared and changed, and the fact that I have no family history, I've been fast-tracked through tests and specialist appointments. We're still gathering information, and over the next couple of weeks we'll have a clearer picture of what treatment will look like.

Even though breast cancer treatments have advanced enormously and outcomes continue to improve, this is still scary. There are moments I'm strong, and moments I'm terrified. It took a lot of courage to share this video.

Around 1,000 Australian women under 40 are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. That's about 3 women every day. Many of them have no family history—just like me.

As a nurse, I know healthcare, but cancer is its own world, and I'm learning alongside all of you. I'll continue sharing what I learn and what this journey involves in the hope that it might help someone else.

🤍 Trust yourself if something doesn't feel right.
🤍 Don't assume you're "too young".
🤍 Don't assume you're safe because nobody in your family has had it.
🤍 Share this with the women you love.
