Yesterday I wrote about values and the difference between what we say matters to us and what our everyday choices actually show.
But it got me thinking about something else:
What do I actually mean when I say health is one of my highest values?
Health and vitality are much bigger than eating well and exercising.
They’re movement, strength, time outside, nourishment, sleep, and understanding what is actually happening inside the body instead of constantly guessing.
Health is also shaped by the environment I live in.
The air I breathe. The light I’m exposed to. The products I use. The materials and chemicals I bring into my home. Mould, air quality, and all those everyday inputs we rarely question because they’ve become so normal.
And then there’s the home itself.
This is one of the reasons healthy-home principles and Feng Shui belong in the health conversation.
Our surroundings shape our behaviour.
A home can make rest, movement, connection and calm easier.
Or it can make all of them surprisingly difficult.
When you look at the patterns often associated with Blue Zones and healthy ageing, the same broader picture appears.
Natural movement. Purpose. Strong relationships. Belonging. Community. Ways of slowing down. Food that supports health. A reason to get up in the morning.
These are the parts we sometimes leave out of the wellness conversation completely.
So are adventure, curiosity, nature, travel, freedom, and having enough space in life to actually enjoy being alive.
That’s where vitality comes in.
I’m not interested in making “healthy” another stressful job.
I’m interested in strong foundations.
Understanding the body.
Reducing the load unnecessarily working against it.
Creating environments that support how we want to live.
And building a life that doesn’t just look healthy from the outside, but actually feels good to live in.

Yesterday we spent time with some people we’d only just met, and I came away thinking again about how much I love meeting new people.
We started somewhere around bushwalking and hiking and somehow wandered through travel, culture, health, social determinants of health, adventure, freedom, peace and all the different ways people choose to experience their lives.
Those are my favourite kinds of conversations.
There is something pretty special about sitting across from people who were strangers a few hours earlier and discovering shared interests, different perspectives and enough common ground to genuinely learn from each other.
Somewhere in the conversation, we got onto values.
People often say health is one of their highest values.
And it reminded me of a question a coach once asked me that has stayed with me ever since:
If someone put a camera on your life for 24 hours and could only judge you by what they saw, what would they think you valued?
Would the way you lived actually match the things you say matter to you?
I’ve always found that question slightly confronting.
There have absolutely been periods of my life where you could look at what I was doing and think: yep. Health matters to her. Movement matters. Animals matter. Freedom, connection, travel and experiencing life matter.
And there have also been 24-hour snippets where you probably would have thought the complete opposite.
Because we’re human.
One day is still only one day.
Life gets messy. We get tired. Work takes over. Things happen. Sometimes the thing we value most is not the thing that wins that particular Tuesday.
But if you zoom out far enough, patterns usually start telling the truth.
Because if something is genuinely important to us, over time it tends to find its way into our decisions.
That doesn’t mean perfection.
It doesn’t mean every meal, every morning, every week or every choice has to be aligned.
But there is a difference between life occasionally pulling us away from something we value and continually saying something matters while consistently making decisions that move us further away from it.
Our lives today are the accumulation of decisions we’ve made in the past.
Which I actually find encouraging.
Because it means today’s decisions get to contribute to what comes next.
So perhaps the better question isn’t:
What do I say I value?
It’s:
If someone watched the ordinary parts of my life, what would they believe matters to me?

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿🤔
Protein has become one of the dominant messages in modern nutrition. More protein, higher protein meals, protein-enriched foods and supplements — the emphasis has increasingly been on getting more.
But a major 𝒓𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝟯𝟱𝟬 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒊𝒆𝒔 (ScienceDaily, 2 August 2026) is bringing another perspective into the conversation.
The research suggests that reducing protein intake can influence metabolism, nutrient signalling, inflammation and cellular health, with particular relevance for people who are relatively sedentary. Lower protein intake has also been associated with changes in biological pathways linked to healthy ageing and longevity.
This doesn't make protein the enemy.
Protein remains fundamental to muscle growth, repair and maintenance, and increased intake can be important for older adults, athletes and people with higher physical demands. The question is more nuanced than simply adding more protein to everyone's diet.
𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 ⚠
Physical activity, age, metabolism and the overall quality of our diet all influence how protein is used — and how the body responds when protein intake changes.
The review also highlights the role of individual amino acids and nutrient-sensing pathways. When protein availability is reduced, biological signals such as FGF21 increase, while pathways associated with growth and nutrient abundance can become less active. These processes are increasingly being studied in relation to metabolism, cellular maintenance and healthy ageing.
And this brings us back to something we often talk about at Connect & Nourish: understanding what is happening beneath the surface.
Our gut and metabolism are deeply connected. What we eat interacts with the trillions of microorganisms living within the gut, while microbial activity produces metabolites that can influence metabolic and immune processes.
ZinZino's 𝗚𝘂𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘄 into this relationship by measuring three metabolites involved in tryptophan metabolism — tryptophan, indole-3-propionic acid (IPA) and kynurenine (KYN).
These are used to generate five markers, including the Gut Health Index, Microbiome Efficiency and Immune Stress Indicator.
𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝘇𝘇𝗹𝗲 — insight into your gut-metabolic function rather than relying entirely on generalised nutritional recommendations.
The goal isn't to follow every new nutrition trend.
It's to understand the foundations of your health, recognise that your requirements are individual, and use better information to make choices that support your body over time.
More protein isn't automatically better. More knowledge about your own health can be ✍️

Saw a woman this morning who stopped me mid-thought, moving like an athlete in her late 70s.
This is what longevity actually means to me. Not a bigger number of years. Freedom. Still carrying my own groceries, still taking stairs without a second thought, still getting on a plane and going wherever I want, still thinking clearly enough to make my own calls.
There's a woman called Joan MacDonald who couldn't manage her own stairs without gasping at 70. Now in her 80s, off most of her medication, hasn't broken a bone in years despite falls, still cycling to the beach most days. She wasn't sporty. She just decided decline wasn't inevitable.
Which version are you on track to become?
Genuinely asking, because I ask myself this constantly.

This is one of those BOGO boxes where I immediately went: yep, this actually makes sense.
Not because it’s cute.
Because it covers so many of the real-life things that tend to hit all at once this time of year.
The wired-but-tired evenings.
The winter bugs.
The “why is everyone coughing?” season.
The sore lower back.
The overstimulated nervous system.
The house that needs to smell fresh without fake fragrance.
The busy brain that forgot how to switch off.
And this is where essential oils become genuinely useful.
Not as random pretty bottles sitting in a drawer, but as part of your actual daily rhythm.
A roller before bed.
A diffuser blend when the house feels heavy.
A chest balm when breathing needs support.
A room spray instead of synthetic fragrance.
A bath soak when your body needs a reset.
A massage blend when your back is having opinions.
This box gives you 10 products while only paying for 4, which makes it a really strong way to build out your natural home and wellness toolkit without buying everything one by one.
You’ve got support for sleep, breathing, immune season, body comfort, focus, emotional grounding, metabolic support and low-tox home rituals.
Basically: winter support, nervous system support and “can this house please feel calm again?” support in one box.

The 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗶𝗲𝘁 is gaining attention as a practical response to modern food challenges like ultra-processed foods and declining diet quality.
As highlighted by 𝑫𝒓 𝑪𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒏 𝑹𝒐𝒃𝒆𝒓𝒕𝒔𝒐𝒏, we’ve reached a point where the impact of industrialised food is no longer theoretical — it’s measurable and linked to real health outcomes.
At its core, the Nordic Diet focuses on whole, minimally processed foods: fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, herring), whole grains (oats, rye, barley), root vegetables, berries, and fermented foods. It emphasises rapeseed oil over olive oil, offering a balanced profile of essential fats.
Key outcomes associated with this approach:
❤️ Supports cardiovascular health (cholesterol, blood pressure, stroke risk)
🔥 Helps regulate inflammation, a central driver of chronic disease
🧠 Improves gut health via fibre and fermented foods
🌟Promotes more stable blood sugar and sustained energy
Often described as the “cold-water equivalent” of the Mediterranean diet, it provides 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗲𝘁 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸.
Importantly, this is not about drastic change. Incremental shifts — adding fibre-rich foods, prioritising whole ingredients, and increasing fatty fish intake — are sufficient to begin influencing outcomes.
From a practical implementation perspective, brands such as 𝒁𝒊𝒏𝒛𝒊𝒏𝒐 𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒏 with this type of nutritional framework through their 𝒕𝒆𝒔𝒕-𝒃𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒅, 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒏𝒖𝒕𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 approach.
Rather than relying on generic supplementation models, their concept focuses on individual biomarker feedback (such as fatty acid balance), which can help contextualise dietary intake within a more precise physiological profile 🧬
Supporting products that complement this style of nutrition are available through The Low Tox Shop 🌿
Alternatively, if you want to have a personal chat, reach out for further information or guidance on how this framework can be applied in a practical, day-to-day context.
A practical, evidence-aligned model that reconnects nutrition with local, seasonal, and minimally processed food systems 🌍

Chronic inflammation is one of the most common things people are trying to address in their health.
Anti-inflammatory diets, omega-3 supplementation, lifestyle adjustments — all of these are valuable tools. But there's a layer underneath that often gets missed: the state of your cell membranes.
Cell membranes are built from fatty acids. When the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 is too high, membranes become rigid. And rigid cell membranes can't function as they should > they're less able to allow nutrients in, manage waste out, or respond properly to the signals they receive.
This is where a lot of chronic inflammation originates. And it's why addressing inflammation without knowing your fatty acid ratio is essentially working in the dark.
The Zinzino BalanceTest measures 11 fatty acids from a dry blood spot sample taken at home.
Results come back from a lab in Norway showing your exact ratio, what you're deficient in, and what dietary adjustments would move the needle.
We currently have a limited Easter offer running —-> 3 spots, in-person testing in Darwin, $70 (RRP $332). Offer ends 13 April.

Omega-6 and omega-3 get mentioned a lot in wellness circles. What gets mentioned a lot less is why the balance between them actually matters.
Your cell membranes are built from fatty acids. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 in those membranes directly affects how every cell in your body absorbs nutrients, manages inflammation, and functions at a basic level.
The target ratio is 3:1.
In practice, most people we test are sitting far higher than that - sometimes as high as 28:1, including in children.
There's a dry blood test that measures 11 fatty acids from a simple at-home sample. It tells you exactly where your ratio sits and what your cells are working with.
Most people have never heard of it. Most people would benefit from doing it.
What would you guess your ratio is right now? Drop it below 👇
