THIS IS NOT A DRILL: SIZZLER IS RETURNING TO AUSTRALIA!

After closing its final Australian restaurants in November 2020, Sizzler is officially making a comeback. The first new restaurant is planned for the new NH Sydney Airport hotel in Mascot, at 102–106 Robey Street, which is expected to open in 2027. (The same way it works in many parts of Asia, many are attached to hotels).

Some states like South Australia, Victoria and Tassie haven't seen the chain in over 20 years.

An exact opening date for Sizzler has not yet been announced, but there are already plans to potentially open more restaurants around Australia.

That means we might finally get to relive those childhood family dinners, except this time we’ll be taking our own families.

Unlimited soft drink, bowls piled dangerously high with soft serve and huge amounts of that legendary cheesy Parmesan toast before the main meal had even arrived.

Then there were the famous chicken dishes, especially the Malibu Chicken Supreme. That crispy crumbed chicken topped with ham and melted cheese, served with its unforgettable creamy honey-mustard-style sauce, was the meal many Australians ordered every single time. People still talk about it online decades later, usually followed by the words, “I’ve tried making the sauce at home, but it’s never quite the same.”

Sizzler wasn’t just dinner. It was an event.

You’d grab a plate from the salad bar with every intention of making something healthy, then somehow return with potato skins, pasta, soup, jelly and whatever else could be balanced without touching the table.

There were the baked potatoes smothered in sour cream, the hot chips, taco ingredients, pasta dishes and the apple crumble covered with vanilla soft serve, chocolate or caramel sauce and far too many sprinkles.

And, of course, the cheese toast. Crispy, buttery and cheesy on one side, soft on the other, and delivered in quantities that were never quite large enough. Someone at the table was always watching the basket, waiting to grab the last piece before their siblings did.

For many families during the late 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s, Sizzler was where you went for birthdays, special occasions or simply when Mum and Dad wanted everyone to eat something without an argument.

Now a whole new generation may finally experience the excitement of being told:

“Yes, you can go back to the buffet again.”

Sydney gets the first one, but hopefully it won’t be too long before the rest of Australia gets Sizzler back too.
