Moist healing vs dry healing has been debated for years, not only in cosmetic tattooing, but throughout wound care and medicine.

Current evidence suggests moist healing may support re-epithelialisation (the biological process of replacing and restoring tissue) by allowing easier movement of skin cells, enzymes and growth factors across the wound surface, while excessive dryness and crusting may slow this process.

After a cosmetic tattoo, the skin barrier is temporarily compromised, increasing transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Using an inert occlusive gel or cream can help reduce excessive water loss, support the healing environment, and provide a protective barrier while the skin recovers.

Because post-procedure skin is highly sensitive, simple and biologically inactive aftercare products are generally preferred to minimise irritation and support stable healing outcomes.
